The Oregon-Davis School Corporation will offer free meals to all children ages 18 and younger and those who are over the age of 18 who are enrolled in a state-approved educational program for the mentally or physically disabled.

Oregon-Davis Receives Title IV Grant to Boost STEM Education
Oregon-Davis Schools’ STEM education efforts are getting a boost, thanks to a grant for $51,500. That’s according to Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “We were one of 82 school districts in the State of Indiana that received a Title IV grant from the state,” says Superintendent Dr. Don Harman, “which will be utilized for professional development to increase our teachers’ instructional capacity in the area of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics.”

Hamlet Firefighters Teach O-D Students about Fire Safety
Firefighters have been educating students on fire safety during Fire Prevention Week.
Hamlet Fire Department members were at the Oregon-Davis Elementary School on Wednesday morning where the students were taught basic prevention skills. The students were also given a demonstration of the extrication tool.
The firefighters challenged the students to remind parents to change the batteries in smoke detectors and to discuss a meeting place outside of the home in the case of a fire. Fire drills should be practiced and a back up plan in place in case of emergency situations.
OD Elementary Receives Donation
Tiffany Nagai, a representative of Farm Bureau was present at the Oregon-Davis School Board meeting to donate $500 to the elementary school. The money will go toward a field trip to Fair Oaks Farms. Continue reading
Starke County Youth Club Prepares for Annual WKVI Radiothon
Starke County Youth Club members and volunteers will take over the WKVI airwaves on Friday to raise money for the nonprofit organization. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says they provide academic support to 600 youngsters across the county at after-school sites at Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis Elementary schools and at O-D Junior/Senior High School. They give students quiet time to do homework, offer one-on-one tutoring in a specific subject and offer a variety of enrichment programs like technology classes, videography and world travel through culture centers. Services are offered each Monday through Friday for three hours after school.
“That is the time when kids are most likely to be the victims of or perpetrators of violent crime. We know that kids who don’t have proper supervision, who don’t have great role models, who aren’t engaged in something productive, make the wrong choices in their lives. So we’re there to provide a safe, engaging and positive environment for kids once the school day ends,” Szakonyi says. Continue reading
Oregon-Davis Kindergarten Screenings Set for This Week
Parents of incoming kindergarten students may register their child for kindergarten on Tuesday, April 16 from 8 to 11 a.m., and from noon to 1 p.m., as well as Wednesday, April 17 from 1 to 6 p.m. CT.
To be eligible for enrollment, the child must be five on or before Aug. 1, 2013. You are urged to make an appointment for your child’s screening. Screening will take 15 minutes per child.
Oregon-Davis Elementary to be Honored at Indiana Statehouse
The Indiana State Board of Education recently notified Oregon-Davis School Superintendent Dr. Steve Disney that the elementary school will be honored at the Indiana Statehouse today.
“They extended an invitation to me to bring our Elementary Principal, Mr. Bennett, and four of our elementary teachers to be recognized at the Indiana Statehouse on Thursday morning,” said Dr. Disney. “They’re recognizing the ten most improved schools in the State of Indiana and said that Oregon-Davis was 9th and that’s out of almost 900 schools.”
