Summer Safety: Water Tips
There’s no time like the summertime! 8 person hot tubs are a must-have accessory for a family party. It’s finally warm enough to go swimming. As you’re breaking out your bikini or swim trunks, take some time to remember certain safety measures to practice when it comes to water. The Red Cross has a number of helpful tips for disaster prevention.
Never leave a child unattended! Even if lifeguards are present, there should be a designated familiar adult easily accessible to the child. Have young or inexperienced swimmers wear a life jacket or some kind of flotation device. Teach children to always ask permission before going near water. Practice the “buddy system” when swimming, even if at a public pool or beach.
NIPSCO Updates Power Restoration Timeline
NIPSCO officials say most customers in their service area should have electricity by 10 p.m. tonight, and service to the rest should be back on sometime tomorrow. Monday night’s storms left 128,000 total customers across northwest Indiana in the dark. NIPSCO crews and workers from other utility companies in Indiana and surrounding states have been working around the clock since to restore power. As of 11:30 a.m. CDT, 32,000 customers are still without power. Continue reading

Intoxicated Driver Arrested After Posting Bond for a Friend
A woman police say came to the Marshall County Jail early Sunday morning to post bond for a prisoner wound up back there as an inmate a short time later. According to a news release from the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, several people came to the jail at 4:15 a.m. As they were leaving about 20 minutes later, a jail staffer noticed one or more of them was possibly drunk. Summer Safety: Don’t Leave Children Unattended in a Vehicle
Summer temperatures continue to soar, and although it may seem like common sense to never keep your child in a parked car, over the past 16 years more than 600 children have died of heatstroke due to being left unattended in a vehicle. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, on a 60 degree day, temperatures inside a car can reach well above 110 degrees quickly.

Man Pleads Guilty to Manufacturing Methamphetamine in Car
A man was sentenced in Marshall Superior Court 1 on Wednesday after he pleaded guilty in a plea agreement with the state on a charge of manufacturing methamphetamine while traveling in a vehicle.
Gary Beatty, 27, admitted in court that on Sept. 17, 2013 he was manufacturing methamphetamine in his vehicle. A concerned citizen notified police of suspicious activity inside the vehicle and a traffic stop was initiated after a Marshall County deputy found that the license plate number returned to a different vehicle and it was expired. Beatty could not supply the officer with a valid registration and current insurance. As a result, the vehicle was impounded.
South Bend Woman Arrested after Traffic Stop
A traffic stop initiated by an officer with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department resulted in the arrest of the driver.
Ashley Turner’s vehicle was pulled over Wednesday night on U.S. 31 near the intersection of 1st Road. The officer reportedly found marijuana, a substance believed to be methamphetamine and a controlled substance. The officer believed that Turner may be under the influence of a controlled substance.
Heeter Sentenced to Ten Years in Prison
Plymouth woman was sentenced to 10 years in the Indiana Department Corrections after pleading guilty in a plea agreement with the state to charges of conspiracy to manufacture methamphetamine and neglect of a dependent.
Amanda Heeter admitted to Judge Robert O. Bowen in Marshall Superior Court 1 that she conspired with two other defendants to manufacture methamphetamine in her home on Loon Court in Plymouth. She also admitted that the act of manufacturing methamphetamine placed a dependent child in danger.
Plymouth Officials Announce Pregis Packaging Solutions Expansion
A Deerfield, Ill.-based packaging company is expanding its operations in Marshall County. Pregis Protective Packaging Solutions currently operates a 360,000 square foot facility in Plymouth. The city council this week approved a tax abatement for the company’s $2.3 million local investment. Continue reading
Marshall County Government to Move Foward with Bond Refinancing
The Marshall County Commissioners and the Marshall County Council met in joint session Monday morning to discuss the possibility of refinancing the bonds the county took out when the Marshall County Jail was built back in 2006.
The bond for the jail project was roughly $15 million in 2006 and $11 million is still outstanding. The county is hoping to lower their payment of $1.2 million per year until 2026.
Plymouth Officials Cut River Park Center Ribbon
A flood-prone area of downtown Plymouth is now a park for all to enjoy. U.S. Senator Joe Donnelly was among the dignitaries on hand for Saturday’s dedication of the city’s River Park Center. He praised the community’s ability to see a problem and continue to improve it and make it better, as they did by turning the former G&G Grocery and Harvey Mart location into a family-friendly recreational space. Man Died of Accidental Drowning
The body of a man was found in the Yellow River Thursday evening.
An autopsy to find the cause of death was conducted Friday. The preliminary cause of death is accidental drowning.
Kayakers notified the Plymouth Police Department on Thursday evening that they found a body in the Yellow River by Oakhill Avenue in Plymouth. The deceased man was recovered by the effort of officers from the Plymouth Police Department, Marshall County Sheriff’s Department, Indiana Conservation officers, Plymouth Fire Department, and the Marshall County Coroner.
Kayakers Find Body in Plymouth River
Kayakers in Marshall County made a grisly discovery last night. They found an adult male’s body in the Yellow River off the end of Lynn Drive in Plymouth, according to our reporting partners at WNDU-TV. Continue reading
