The Marshall County Council will meet today at 9 a.m. ET.
Sheriff Tom Chamberlin will request employee replacements as well as Mary Jane Walsworth from the probation department. Laura Mann will have an update on the Heminger House.
The council members will entertain an additional appropriation request for the 7th Road construction project in the amount of $252,000 from the cumulative bridge fund. The council members will also discuss a salary amendment for a WIC employee.
Representatives from the Plymouth Tennis Club and City of Plymouth are pausing in their plan to develop new tennis courts at Centennial Park. They issued a joint statement saying “this pause will allow the organizations to better address remaining questions before moving forward.” Continue reading
The Marshall County Commissioners received an update on two ongoing construction projects.
Bart Trester, project supervisor for the 7th Road project, said the project is on schedule to finish this year.
“The contractors have completed the removal of the unsuitable soils and are backfilling with the borrowed material along the project limits. With that done, the contractors have been able to upgrade the main line and cut ditches along the project limits. They have completed the installation of the box culvert at Zimmer Ditch and a temporary lane has been constructed. Traffic will be switched over and this will allow the contractor to begin construction on the roundabout on Michigan Road. Pile driving issues on the Seltenright Ditch are on hold as we’re waiting for the contractor to return to the project. In talking with the designer, we should be able to lighten driving requirements so we don’t have to drive them so deep,” explained Trester.
Indiana students overall showed improvement on their ISTEP scores in both math and language arts. Scores released yesterday by the Indiana Department of Education indicate 80.7 percent of students passed English, compared to 79.5 percent in 2013. The Marshall County Commissioners will meet today at 8:30 a.m. ET.
Emergency Management Agency Director Clyde Avery will update the commissioners on the emergency plan. During the last commissioners meeting, Avery explained that the emergency plan was changed after events during the winter season. Department heads said working with the EMA Director by way of virtual means would work better, but Avery believes that may not be the best solution – especially if electricity and internet services are not available.
Since 1980 grain bins across the U.S have been responsible for more than 180 deaths and 675 injuries. Just last year, a Hoosier farmer in La Porte county was killed in a grain bin accident. This month a 9-year-old Wisconsin boy was killed after falling into a grain bin. With harvest time approaching the Indiana Department of Labor wants to remind everyone of the hazardous nature of working with grain bins and offer some tips to assure safety.
Officers with the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department are attempting to solve a burglary that occurred between 11 p.m. on Friday, July 25 to 10 a.m. on Saturday, July 26.
Some unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked barn in the 14,000 block of 6th Road in Plymouth and removed approximately $5,000 worth of hand tools, power tools and scrap wire.
Unfortunately those struggling financially can be the most vulnerable to scams. The federal government as well as Indiana general attorney,Greg Zoeller, took action against schemers who have taken more than $14,000 from unsuspecting homeowners. On Thursday, Zoeller filed lawsuits against seven companies running fraudulent mortgage rescue or relief schemes.
A Texas man who was visiting residents at a home in the 100 block of Franklin Street in Plymouth was arrested on a preliminary charge of child molesting.
Plymouth Police Department officers were called to the home on Friday afternoon after receiving a report that an 11-year-old girl was allegedly sexually assaulted. After further investigation, including the questioning of the suspect, 67-year-old Jonas Olvera, Olvera was arrested and booked into the Marshall County Jail on the charge of child molesting. Olvera was also wanted a warrant issued in 2009 in connection with another report of child molesting.
The Blueberry Festival Committee members are looking at new locations to hold the festival and according to Festival Coordinator Sherrie Martin it’s something that’s been discussed for years.
Martin told WKVI News that the committee has always been planning for “what if”. With that in mind, the members have been pursuing their options in moving the festival out of Centennial Park in Plymouth for more than 10 years.
A Bremen man was sentenced last week in U.S. District Court to two years probation and ordered to pay $34,126.25 in restitution for 18 months worth of unemployment benefits. Court documents indicate Timothy Heckaman, 53, previously pleaded guilty to the felony offense of theft of government property. Continue reading
Marshall County Prosecutor David R. Holmes has purchased highly sensitive weight measuring scales with money from the Pretrial Diversion Fund.
Holmes stated in a press release that the new changes in the drug laws make it essential to have accurate readings on the weight of any drugs seized in a case. That weight needs to be proven in court.
A Walkerton woman was sentenced in Marshall Superior Court after admitting to possessing heroin in her apartment located in Culver.
She pleaded guilty to a charge of possession of heroin within 1,000 feet of a housing complex. She was sentenced by Judge Robert O. Bowen to ten years in the Indiana Department of Corrections on that charge. Owens was additionally sentenced to a year-and-a-half in prison on a charge of neglect of a dependent in an unrelated case. The sentences will run concurrently, or at the same time, and she was ordered to undergo intensive drug treatment in the purposeful incarceration program.
Court Services Director Ward Byers appeared before the Marshall County Commissioners this week to discuss a contract addendum with 3M for electronic monitoring services.
The county signed a contract with 3M in 2011 that does the very basic in electronic monitoring services. If an offender commits a violation, a message is sent via text message or email to officials on mobile devices or to a desktop computer. Byers said this addendum will offer more to the county.
An Argos woman authorities in Marshall County say dumped a terrier mix dog in front of a house on 19th Road last week faces an animal cruelty charge. Police say Kim Paul brought the female dog to the Marshall County Humane Society on Wednesday, July 16 and said she no longer wanted the animal. Employees there told her the shelter was full. A public hearing concerning amendments to an ordinance regarding electronic message signs was conducted on Monday morning.
Marshall County Plan Director Ralph Booker presented the changes which include operational limitations, minimum display time, message change sequence, light intensity change, sign design and requirements for static message signs, motion message signs and video message signs. Setback requirements were also included.
The Marshall County Commissioners approved new hires for two new positions at the highway department.
On Monday morning, Commissioner Deb Griewank presented the recommendations of Laurie Baker as the administration manager at the highway department and Jason Peters as the supervisor of county highways. Baker is currently working in Judge Dean Colvin’s office in superior court while Peters is serving in the capacity of interim highway superintendent.
A Goshen resident faces numerous charges in Marshall County after a traffic stop and subsequent arrest late Friday night. An officer from the Marshall County Police Department tried to stop a car at the intersection of Michigan and 4A Roads, according to a police department news release. Continue reading
The Marshall County commissioners will meet this morning at 9:30 a.m. ET where a packed agenda will meet the commission members.
The commissioners plan to make highway appointments and to hear updates from the CASA director, health department, building department and County Attorney James Clevenger.
