Pulaski County officials are holding an event this week to raise awareness of child abuse. “It is Thursday, April 19 at 12:30 at the Pulaski County Courthouse Lawn,” County Commissioner Kenny Becker announced during last week’s joint county council and commissioners meeting. “There’ll be a face painter, music, activities, community speakers at the event.” He added that the goal of the event is to offer residents resources, educational ideas, and actions they can take to prevent child abuse.
The Pulaski County Farmers’ Market continues to expand. Rather than alternating between Winamac and Francesville each week, a weekly market will be held in both communities this year. “This year, they will be every Saturday in Winamac and every Thursday evening in Downtown Francesville,” Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer told the county commissioners last week. “So they’re expanding the opportunities for the market, and they’ll just be consistently in Winamac on Saturdays.”
Construction in the Pulaski County Courthouse has county officials offering alternatives for those who need to visit government offices. The basement entrance on the west side of the courthouse will be closed during the courthouse elevator replacement project, since it will be in the construction area.
Preparations continue for the replacement of the Pulaski County Courthouse elevator. Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Johnston told the county council Monday the project is going well. “All the material has been ordered,” he said. “The demolition is going to actually begin the end of this month, the last week of this month.”
Pulaski County is a step closer to getting its security committee back up and running. The county council Monday appointed council member Ken Boswell as its representative. The county commissioners appointed Jerry Locke last week.
How to increase security in Pulaski Circuit Court and other county offices will continue to be discussed during tonight’s Pulaski County Council meeting. Judge Michael Shurn is expected to ask council members to appoint a representative to the county’s newly-reestablished security committee.
Discussions about moving Pulaski Circuit Court into the Justice Center are drawing complaints from Judge Michael Shurn. During Monday’s county commissioners meeting, Shurn complained that he hasn’t been included in recent discussions. “I never see it on the docket, but yet I read about it in the newspaper,” he said. “You’re trying to decide what security is, and you’re trying to decide the future of the Circuit Court. You know, I think it would behoove you all to actually involve the Circuit Court in that conversation. I’m sort of shocked that you don’t do that.”
Construction’s set to start today on a new elevator at the Pulaski County Courthouse. That will cause some changes for government business for the next several months.
Discussion continues about moving Pulaski Circuit Court out of the County Courthouse and into the Justice Center. The move is seen as a cheaper alternative to installing and staffing a security checkpoint in the courthouse.

The Pulaski County Courthouse elevator is another step closer to getting replaced. On Monday, the county commissioners chose TL Kincaid Contracting to build the new elevator for $489,000.
The Pulaski County Commissioners are once again expected to try opening bids for lawn care and snow removal at some county properties, during tonight’s meeting.
The Pulaski County Election Board finalized arrangements for early primary voting, during Monday’s meeting. The early voting period runs from April 10 through May 7, ahead of the May 8 primary.
The Pulaski County Courthouse elevator is a step closer to getting replaced. Bids from three construction companies were opened during last week’s county commissioners meeting. They ranged from $489,000 to over $594,000. The bids will now be reviewed by Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Johnston, County Attorney Kevin Tankersley, and representatives from Keystone Architecture, before the commissioners make a decision.

The replacement of the elevator at the Pulaski County Courthouse has been delayed slightly. “Because we got no bids on the elevator project, we had to push the date back for construction,” Maintenance Supervisor Jeff Johnston told the county council and commissioners Monday. “With pushing it back to March, we were able to get three interested parties.”
The possibility of a tax abatement for Metal Fab Engineering will be considered by the Pulaski County Council tonight. Council members will decide whether to confirm the business’s designation as an economic recovery area. That would allow the company to request a tax abatement. Members of the public will have a chance to weigh in tonight, before a decision is made.
The Pulaski County Commissioners will open bids tonight for the construction of a new courthouse elevator. Plans call for the current elevator to be demolished and replaced with a larger one that can more easily fit people using wheelchairs.
Pulaski County officials are taking steps to keep the county’s data secure. IT Director Matt Voltz told the county commissioners last week he’s looking at buying a new backup device.
