Commissioners Uphold Demolition Order for Downtown Winamac Building

Pulaski County CourthouseThe Pulaski County Commissioners have agreed to uphold a demolition order given to a downtown Winamac building.

A hearing was held during Tuesday night’s Commissioner’s meeting for the property, located in the 200 block of West Main Street. The facility is home to a tax service company, but according to County Building Inspector Dave Dare, it has been neglected over the years.

Starke County Election Board Finalizes Ballots

  
 

The ballots are set for the Nov. 3 General Elections in Starke County. Voters in the towns of North Judson and Hamlet will elect clerk-treasurers. In North Judson, Republican incumbent Donna Henry has drawn a challenge from Democrat Alicia (Amidei) Collins. North Judson voters will also choose between incumbent Republican Wendy Hoppe and Democrat Joan Haugh for the Ward 2 town council seat. Democrat Ward 1 incumbent Jane Ellen Felchuk and Republican Ward 3 candidate Nathan Bradley are both unopposed. Continue reading

Pulaski County to Implement Electronic Recording

Pulaski County CourthouseA Pulaski County government office is looking to implement electronic recording services.

During last night’s Pulaski County Commissioners meeting, the county Recorder’s office made a request to use “Simplifile” to record titles and other documents, digitally. Banks and title companies are experiencing pressure to provide their real estate services in a more timely fashion.

West Central School Board Approves Vocational Agreement

west central logoStudents at West Central High School have a chance to try several careers on for size thanks to the corporation’s participation in the Indian Trails Vocational Cooperative. Superintendent Don Street says West Central shares resources with schools in White, Jasper and Newton Counties.

“We have students this year from North White School Corporation that are involved in our welding program and our health occupations program. We’ve had students as well in our drafting/CAD program, as well as our anatomy/physiology and athletic training courses as well.” Continue reading

DNR Reports More Women Hunters

huntingHunting is growing in popularity among women nationwide and in Indiana, according to officials with the Department of Natural Resources. They say the number of hunting licenses sold to women increased by 93 percent from 2006 to 2014. During that same time period the number of female youth hunters skyrocketed 114 percent. West Central School Board Braces for Budget Hit

west central logoThe West Central School Corporation is anticipating a $385,000 reduction in general fund revenues in the coming year. Superintendent Don Street says that’s due to several factors.

“Our enrollment is at currently 818 students. The complexity index that we have talked about before has changed with different laws with the state legislature, and many small, rural schools are being hurt by that complexity index change.” Continue reading

Monterey Days Festival Continues Through Monday

Monterey Days FestivalDon’t miss the 18th annual Monterey Days Festival this weekend. Today’s highlights include karaoke contests for children and adults, a pedal tractor pull, mini excavating rodeo and a K9 demonstration by the Pulaski County Sheriff’s Department.

The parade through downtown Monterey starts at 5 p.m. EDT. The Monterey-Tippecanoe Township Public Library is this year’s grand marshal. Look for the WKVI and MAX 98.3 FM station vehicle in the lineup. Continue reading

Walorski Visits Winamac Community High School

Walorski WinamacCongresswoman Jackie Walorski paid a visit to Winamac Community High School on Monday to check out the school’s new Warrior Academy. Students under the supervision of teacher Karen Butler spend part of the day doing credit recovery. It allows the 16 students in the program to take courses they struggled with in a traditional classroom in an independent study setting. Walorski applauds the efforts to help students graduate. Welcome Home Procession Scheduled for Body of Winamac Soldier

Members of the community are invited to pay their respects to a Winamac native who died while on active military duty. Staff Sgt. Andrew Budd was stationed at Fort Bliss, Texas. He was 27 at the time of his death on Sunday, Aug. 23 in El Paso. His body is being flown to Indianapolis this afternoon and will be returned to Winamac with an escort of police and patriot guard riders along with his family. The procession will travel north up U.S. 35 into Winamac this afternoon and turn east onto Main Street with a final destination of Frain Mortuary. The funeral home will post updates on their Facebook page as to the schedule. Continue reading

Grant Applications Now Being Accepted for Hometown Collaboration Initiative

  
 

Applications are now open for grants serving communities with a population under 25-thousand.

The Indiana Office of Community and Rural Affairs, or OCRA, says applications may be submitted online for their Hometown Collaboration Initiative. The grants can be used for the development of local leaders, economic development, or improving quality of place in local communities.
