The Winamac Town Council this week heard updates from a number of department heads regarding ongoing projects. Rick Dilts, park superintendent, told the council that the park has been closed and winterized in light of inclement weather, and he pointed out a number of mole holes near the baseball diamonds that need to be filled.
Dilts also told the board that his department has been staying busy with chopping trees, brush, and leaves, and their snowplow is in tip-top shape, ready for winter. The park department also has a new lawn mower, which Dilts said has been working out great.
The Winamac Police Department has been commended on their efforts in Operation Pull-Over.
Officer Mike Hoffman told the Winamac Town Board this week that the Winamac Police Department received the Best in State Police Department award and was given a $2,500 equipment grant. The department will be using that money to purchase a computer for a police car. A plaque was displayed to the board.
Rick Dilts, the town park manager, told the town board this week that the park is now closed for the season. More than 100 tables have been placed in storage, the bleachers are now stored and the restrooms have been closed. The volleyball and basketball courts will be winterized this week and a tractor will be set up for the snow season.
The Winamac Town Board heard a request from Park Superintendent Rick Dilts, who inquired as to whether or not Pulaski County Jail inmates could be used to help clean up the park. Those inmates needing community service could be used for the project. The park officials and the Pulaski County Jail officials were to talk and discuss the feasibility of the partnership and the liability issues.
Winamac Police Chief Mike Buchanan told the town board that he is having an issue with the officers telling kids that they are not allowed in the town park. Several kids have been in the park causing problems, and Buchanan said the officers can not discipline the youngsters according to the prosecuting attorney. A report would need to be filed and then brought before the prosecutor and the probation departments before action can be taken. The board ultimately agreed that a policy needs to be in place so that if a crime is committed in the park, officers can reprimand the perpetrators.
Summer help is needed at the Winamac Town Park. Park Superintendent Rick Dilts told the Town Board members that it’s getting into the summer season and employees are needed to help with regular work in the park. For more information, call the Town Hall at (574) 946-3451.
Winamac Wastewater Superintendent, Brad Zellers, told the Town Board this week that his department is getting ready to hook up meters for Star City properties that will be releasing waste into the Winamac Wastewater Plant.
The Winamac Town Board appointed a new Park Superintendent at their recent meeting. Rick Dilts was appointed and he will assume the duties from Don Thompson on April 1st. Don Thompson is retiring after 20 years as the Winamac Town Park Superintendent. The Board thanked him for this dedication to the town and Thompson thanked everyone for the last 20 years and he said he hoped he leaves the park in better shape than when he got it.
