One dollar of every blizzard sold last Thursday at 150 Dairy Queen locations in the state went to support Children’s Hospital for Children and according to WNDU, the Plymouth location gathered $2,760 for Riley Children’s Hospital.

They will be making colorful pillowcases for young patients at Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis at Just Plain Annie’s Quilt Shop in Winamac, starting at 9 a.m. EDT. The shop is located across from Pulaski Memorial Hospital on State Road 14 E. Bring your sewing machine and enjoy a day of fun and fellowship. Even if you can’t sew, you can still help out by pinning, trimming and ironing.

A Winamac hairstylist is sporting a new hairdo for a good cause. Emily Larkin agreed to shave her head once she raised $3,000 for Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis. That’s where her sister, Christina, also a hairstylist, was treated as a teenager when she was diagnosed with Stage 4 Hodgkin’s Lymphoma. Larkin said her bold new haircut was inspired by the Indianapolis Colts cheerleaders who shaved their head in support of Coach Chuck Pagano’s leukemia diagnosis inspired Larkin to “take it off.” She nearly doubled her fundraising goal, thanks to generous support from the community. Her sister Christina did the honors during the halftime show of last night’s Winamac Community High School basketball game. Larkin said she “kind of likes” her new short locks, which she will be sporting for Christina’s wedding next month.

EMS Director Talks about Advantages of ALS Service in Starke County
EMS Director Paul Mathewson appeared before the Starke County Commissioners yesterday and shared a story that points out the advantages of moving to Advanced Life Service here. On March 23rd, the ambulance crew was called out to a case where a television fell on a five year old girl from a dresser. Mathewson was on the run and reported that the likelihood of recovery initially looked gloomy, but because of the advanced training, the crew was able to begin treatment and take her into IU Health Starke Hospital. Once there, the girl was stabilized and a Med Flight helicopter was called in to get her to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis as quickly as possible.
Knox Community School Board Spotlights Students Involved in Community Projects
At their recent meeting, the Knox Community School Board members commended the students who took part in the Kiwanis Food Basket project and distribution during the Christmas holiday. The students helped 130 families. Food donations were taken from the public and from the students in the corporation.
