Starke County Council Member Fails to Show Up for Election Board Meeting

Starke County Council Member Tom DeCola failed to appear before the county election board Friday. DeCola had apparently asked to be on the agenda, but by the end of the meeting, he still hadn’t arrived. “Let the minutes show that a second calling for Mr. Tom DeCola to come before the board after his request was sent to us, and he is not present,” said Board President Peg Brettin. “And the request was in writing.”

Starke County Commissioners Approve RV Ordinance

Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson presented a proposed Recreational Vehicle Ordinance to the county commissioners this week which was previously recommended for approval by the Starke County Planning Commission.

Stephenson said the purpose of the ordinance is to provide standards for RV equipment utilized for temporary use without infringement upon residential properties.

Starke County Commissioners to Meet Tonight

The Starke County Commissioners will meet tonight where Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin will discuss a job description for a part-time employee and request approval of a third K9 for the department. The job description was discussed with the Starke County Council members in January after they learned an employee was doing duties outside of the position for which he was hired. The job description should resolve the issue.

Bass Lake Beach Gate House Replacement Discussed by Starke County Park Board

The Starke County Park Board is moving forward with the replacement of the gate house at the Bass Lake Beach. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November. Starke County Building Inspector Terry Stephenson believes the accident, along with wood rot and the settling of concrete, has left the building unsafe.

Starke County Accepts Ownership of San Pierre Building

Starke County will soon be able to proceed with the demolition of a dilapidated building. The commissioners Monday evening agreed to accept the transfer of title to the former Bank of San Pierre at the northwest corner of Broadway and Eliza Streets. It has been vacant for several years, and the county has installed barriers around the structure due to crumbling brick. Continue reading
