2017 Peppermint Parade Application

Knox’s annual Peppermint Parade will take place on December 2nd this year but the application deadline to be a part of the parade is coming soon. Applications were  originally due on Wednesday, November 22nd but the deadline has been extended to allow more people to sign-up.

There is no registration fee but applicants are required to share their contact information, the name of their organization, a brief description and they must specify whether they are entering as a church, a non-profit, a business or as an individual. This year, the Peppermint Parade will feature a reviewing station and a winner will be selected from each specific category and one will be chosen for best overall holiday spirit.

Upcoming Local Red Cross Blood Drives

The Red Cross is always in need of blood donations. However, in the aftermath of the recent natural disasters that have impacted different portions of the country, it is vital to have a wide variety of blood types from a plethora of donors.

Some blood types are unique to certain racial and ethnic groups, so having an assorted blood supply is important to meet the medical needs of an increasingly diverse patient population. Red Cross reports that patients are less likely to experience complications from blood donated by someone of a similar ethnicity. Potential Ordinance Readdressed During Knox City Council Meeting

Last Tuesday, Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston provided an update about an issue discussed during a previous Knox City Council meeting. Back in August, concerns over improper parking methods in town were addressed during the council items. Houston said he would look into whether or not an ordinance regarding those issues exists on the books.

“I looked back and saw what we had about parking on the sidewalk, also there have been some other issues about people parking their car in their front yards or parking RVs in the street so you’ve got wider than a vehicle,” Houston explained, “so I think that we’re going to have to come up with an ordinance.” Continue reading

Starke County Welcomes Indiana Bicentennial Torch

Starke County rolled out the red carpet to welcome the Indiana Bicentennial Torch last evening. It visited Bass Lake, North Judson, Toto and Knox on its journey. Along the way it was carried by 20 notable community members on everything from a steam train to an antique fire truck to a bicycle before being placed in the  Knox Volunteer Fire Department’s rescue boat for its final stop at Wythogan Park. ISDH Confirms Two Mosquito Batches Test Positive for West Nile in Starke County

 
 

The Indiana State Department of Health says Starke County recently tested positive for West Nile Virus.

Two mosquito batches tested for virus in the local area returned positive results, but Starke County has not reported a human case of West Nile in 2016. West Nile is largely transmitted through mosquito bites and can cause flu-like symptoms and even death in extreme cases.

April Color Run To Support Starke County K-9

 An event coming up at the end of April is looking to support the Starke County K-9 Drug Unit.

The 4-H Color Me Green run/walk will take place at Wythogan Park in Knox on April 30th, and is designed to promote healthy lifestyles and activities in the Starke County community. Funds raised will benefit the Starke County Sheriff’s Department in a few ways.

State Releases Bicentennial Route Details

Indiana BicentennialThe route is set for this fall’s Indiana Bicentennial Torch Relay. The event, patterned after the Olympic torch relay, will start in Corydon on Sept. 9 and travel more than 3,200 miles through all 92 counties. Corydon was chosen as the starting destination as it was Indiana’s original capitol.

More than 2,000 torchbearers will shepherd the flame through the state along a route designed to showcase Indiana’s natural beauty, local interest and historic significance to the state. Each county’s bicentennial committee solicited nominees to carry the torch. That list is being vetted at the state level now. Continue reading
