The Pulaski County Council has begun the process of making two sites eligible for tax abatements. Council members approved preliminary resolutions Monday designating the JSI Steel property and a piece of land near the intersection of U.S. 421 and State Road 14 as economic revitalization areas.
A public hearing over tax abatement requests from Standard Industrial was held during the Winamac Town Council meeting Monday night.
No public comments were provided but President Bryce Brumm spoke during the hearing and provided a bit of background information about his company.
He stated they began in 2004 with distribution and started manufacturing in January of 2015. Over the last three years, the company has seen some significant growth, going from 8 people initially to 38 employees today.
Brumm said he expects even more development in the coming year and he wants to make sure the Town of Winamac will see the benefits since manufacturing is a highly competitive market in the area. Continue reading
The manufacturer moving into the old Anvil & Saw property on Pulaski County Road 200 South is on track to get a $200,000 loan from the county. The county commissioners conditionally approved a revolving loan request Monday from IBC Thermoplastics.
The business moving into the old Anvil & Saw property on Pulaski County Road 200 South still isn’t ready to officially request a tax abatement. The county council began the process back in August by adopting a preliminary resolution designating the site an economic revitalization area.
The Pulaski County Council is scheduled to adopt the county’s 2019 budget tonight, but a number of issues still have to be addressed. Assessor Holly VanDerAa has been calling for a tax increase to make up a shortfall in the county’s Reassessment budget. She says the change would reduce the need for various costs to be paid out of the county’s General Fund.

A tax abatement request for Selected Furniture was considered during Tuesday night’s Knox City Council meeting. Mayor Dennis Estok presented the request to the council members and noted a few details about the company.
He shared that as of a few weeks ago, Selected Furniture still needed to pay about $37,458 in real property taxes and $21,062.85 in personal property taxes for a total of approximately $58,521 owed in back taxes. Continue reading

The Pulaski County Council has finalized a tax abatement for Metal Fab Engineering. Community Development Commission Executive Director Nathan Origer told council members Monday that the request would help the company buy new automation equipment and Squickmons plasma cutters. That’s expected to lead to the creation of about 10 new jobs.
Then for some exterior metal we needed a nice ultra-marine blue and so chose the Ral 5002 powder coating from Trident Powders and it has worked amazingly well so we are very pleased with that.
One unusual thing about this request, according to Origer, is that the equipment has already been installed. “There is a mechanism that we have employed in the past that will allow for us to move forward with a resolution for a tax abatement,” he explained, “if we first approve a resolution waiving the non-compliance and saying, ‘Yes, technically you shouldn’t have it in before you submitted the paperwork, but we want to work with you and we are going to allow that.'” Both of the necessary resolutions were approved by the county council Monday.

A Pulaski County manufacturer may soon be seeking a tax abatement. The county council approved a resolution Monday creating a preliminary economic revitalization area for Metal Fab Engineering.
An area in Culver known commonly as “Sand Hill Farms” located at 540 W Jefferson Street received economic revitalization area and economic target area status as a result of a resolution passed by the Culver City Council Wednesday night.
Town Manager Jonathan Leist explained that the recently created Culver Economic Development Commission is permitted to grant tax abatement for residential property under state law. Earlier this week, the Culver EDC met for the first time and passed a resolution recommending that the city council classify this entire parcel on Jefferson Street as both an economic revitalization area and an economic target area to allow for future residential tax abatement.
If businesses don’t create jobs, they don’t deserve a tax abatement, according to a Pulaski County Council member, even if they’ve already been getting one for several years. Last week, the council considered several abatement renewal requests. All of them except one had met their requirements and were recommended for approval by the Community Development Commission.
