Traffic Control Specialists wins Industry of the Year Award from the Starke County Economic Development Corporation.
Traffic Control Specialists was honored Thursday with the Starke County Economic Development Foundation’s first Industry of the Year Award. Foundation Executive Director Lisa Dan presented the award during the annual Prospectus and Achievement Luncheon.
North Judson will not be buying its own electronic speed signs, despite some residents’ claims that they would improve safety. Town Marshal Kelly Fisher presented a few options to the town council last week, ranging from $2,900 up to almost $5,500.
Three Knox businesses are apparently doing a good job of meeting the conditions of their tax abatements. The city council last week approved the CF-1 forms from Traffic Control Specialists, Reagent Chemical & Research, and J.W. Hicks.
A few budget adjustments will be up for the Knox City Council’s approval tonight. Council members will consider granting permission for more money to be spent out of the cumulative sewer treatment fund, as well as for appropriations to be transferred within that fund. A reduction of appropriations in this year’s general, motor vehicle highway, and park funds for the 2021 budget will also be up for approval. Residents will have a chance to weigh in on those proposed changes before the council votes on them.
A traffic control flagger who was killed on the job last
summer is being memorialized with a philanthropic effort. The Ben Fisher
Memorial Fund was established in December by Tracey and Brian Triska, the
owners of Traffic Control Specialists. The Northern Indiana Community
Foundation says the fund will support causes Fisher cared about, such as caring
for veterans and women who’ve experienced domestic abuse.
A donation from a local business will make it easier for some Knox Middle School students to take a field trip to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. Last week, the school board accepted $640 from Traffic Control Specialists. That will help defray the cost of the 6th grade field trip planned for March.
A number of donations were accepted by the Oregon-Davis School Board Monday. Some students will getting new t-shirts, thanks to a pair of donations from Lee Nagai, according to Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “[He] donated $100 to help with the cost of first [and second] grade t-shirts and then also 35 t-shirts that were purchased for the pep band,” Harman explains. “So we appreciate Lee Nagai’s assistance there.”

The Nancy J. Dembowski Community Center was teeming with community spirit Thursday evening during the annual Starke County Chamber of Commerce Awards Dinner.
The event was attended by local leaders, state representatives, former award recipients and a plethora of caring community members. It was led by Chamber of Commerce President Jerry Gurrado and Executive Director Jessica Craig.

A new student pickup procedure is proving to be successful for Knox Elementary School. Principal Michelle Tarnow told the school board last week that the new system is working “beautifully.” She said that on a typical day, the school is able to handle about 100 cars in roughly 14 minutes.
A site plan from Traffic Control Specialists (TCS) was reviewed by the Knox Planning Commission when members met Tuesday night.
Engineer Lee Nagai served as a representative for TCS and went over the company’s plans to expand on their property. When asked what the company does, he informed members that they manufacture and perform maintenance on signs for multiple cities.
When discussing the site plan, he reiterated what was already presented to Knox Board of Works members last week; that officials are planning to build a 90×120 foot structure that will be placed behind their existing building on Pacific Avenue. Continue reading →

The Knox Board of Public Works discussed plans concerning a water connection to a building addition at the Traffic Control Specialists (TCS) business on Hamilton Drive.
Some railroad signs and pavement markings will be updated soon in Starke County.
Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler told the commissioners this week that INDOT recently conducted a railroad crossing audit for the county. Crews found 23 crossings that needed improvement with updated pavement markings or signs.
Ritzler said he is working on funding to update these crossings.
The Knox Board of Works received a lone bid for installation of a lift station to serve the new Traffic Control Specialists facility. Culver-based Thomas Excavating and Welding submitted a total bid of $39,574. That includes $19,638 for installation of the lift station and an additional $19,936 for a force main. Continue reading →
The construction of a new facility for an expanding Knox business will remain on schedule after Knox Mayor Dennis Estok administratively authorized the purchase of a lift station to serve the site. City officials previously agreed to run water and sewer lines to the new Traffic Control Specialists, Inc. location west of Toll Brothers and Knox Fertilizer in the industrial park.
