Two State Roads Reopen after Flooding Event
Two state roads are back open now that flood waters have receded.
The Indiana Department of Transportation opened State Road 39 between State Road 10 and U.S. 30 and State Road 8 between U.S. 35 and State Road 39. Police, Fire and Medical Units Respond to a Two-Vehicle Accident on U.S. 35 and 400 N
The Starke County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch Center confirmed that they received a call about a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 35 and 400 N at 6:17 p.m.
Officers from the Hamlet and Knox Police Departments also responded to the accident, along with members of the Knox and Hamlet Fire Departments. Dispatch reported that all medical units and two helicopters were also sent to the scene. Railroad Crossing Repairs Cause Road Closure
INDOT recently began some rail road crossing repairs that will cause a closure impacting commuters and residents of Starke County.
Norfolk Southern Railroad Company is renewing and repairing a railroad crossing near Knox, causing the closure of State Road 8 between County Road N. 100 E. and County Road N. 200 E.
This closure will last from Monday, September 18th until Friday, September 29th. Norfolk will only be closing this section of State road 8 for railroad crossing rehabilitation. Continue reading
LaPorte County Road Work Set for Next Week
Road work is planned in La Porte County next week to increase safety on U.S. 20.
Indiana Department of Transportation crews will install rumble strips on U.S. 20 between U.S. 35 and the U.S. 20 and State Road 2 intersection. Officials say engineers found a way to use equipment and resources from a nearby project on State Road 39 to install this safety enhancement on the heavily traveled highway.

Chip Sealing to Close State Road 39
The Indiana Department of Transportation is chip sealing another section of highway in Starke County. Starting today, State Road 39 will be closed between State Road 10 and State Road 8. Work is due to wrap up Friday, weather permitting.

Highway Projects Force Oversize Loads to Travel Through Knox
More oversize loads are being routed through Knox as a result of road construction projects in LaPorte County. A superload is classified as a vehicle larger than 16 feet wide, 110 feet long, 15 feet tall or weighing more than 120,000 pounds, according to INDOT officials.
ISP High Visibility Enforcement Targets Part of U.S. 35
State troopers plan to step up patrols and checkpoints on roads identified as the most dangerous in Indiana between now and Aug. 1. Purdue University data indicates the 53 segments of roadways in 18 counties have accounted for 418 alcohol-related crashes. INDOT to Close U.S. 35 to Repair Tracks in Knox
The rough railroad crossing on U.S. 35 in Knox will soon be fixed. Starting Monday INDOT officials plan to close the highway between East John and East Bender Streets to fix the crossing. INDOT’s official marked detour takes motorists around the work using State Roads 8, 39 and 10 to get back to U.S. 35. Drivers of passenger cars can use city streets to bypass the closure. INDOT to Close SR 23 for Chip Sealing
Motorists who take State Road 23 through Walkerton will need to find a new route for the next few days. INDOT is closing the road between U.S. 30 and U.S. 6 to perform chip and fog sealing. The process preserves the road surface. INDOT officials stress the work is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions are not ideal. Southbound motorists can take U.S. 6 south to U.S. 35 and east to U.S. 30 to get around the closure. Northbound motorists can use the opposite route. Continue reading
U.S. 35 Bridge Opens to Traffic
The U.S. 35 bridge is now open!
Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Deitchley notified WKVI Tuesday that the bridge was open to traffic. The last part of the project which included finishing the final surface of the roadway, lane striping and median work was completed in the past few days.
U.S. 35 Bridge Project Nearing Completion
Work on the U.S. 35 bridge is coming to a close.
Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Deitchley stated that it could be next week before the bridge is open to traffic. The final surface of the roadway, lane striping and median work is left. If the weather cooperates, the opening could occur a little sooner than anticipated.
The weather was the reason why the project was pushed back from its original completion date in November.
Deitchley will notify WKVI when the crews are nearing the time when the bridge will be open. The bridge has been closed since June.
U.S. 35 Bridge Opening Delayed
The bridge projects in Starke and LaPorte Counties that Indiana Department of Transportation crews have been feverishly working on for the past six months are close to being done.
INDOT Spokesman Matt Deitchley says one bridge opening has been delayed while the other will be opening at the end of the month.
U.S. 35 Bridge Project on Schedule
The U.S. 35 bridge project is on schedule, according to Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Deitchley who explained that construction crews are working on grading the ground and pouring to install the piers. The bridge was only recently disassembled for new construction.
U.S. 35 Bridge Project on Schedule
The old bridge just south of the U.S. 30 and U.S. 35 interchange just west of Hamlet has been removed and crews are now pile driving the area and getting it ready for a new bridge structure.
INDOT spokesperson Matt Deitchley stated that the project is extensive with the approximate completion date in November. The new bridge will be erected over existing railroad tracks which requires extra attention.
