Unemployment Rates Down from Last Year in Starke, Pulaski Counties
Unemployment rates continue to drop in Starke and Pulaski counties. Starke County’s November unemployment rate was 4.1 percent, according to the latest report from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. That’s the same as it was in October, but a drop of sixth-tenths of a percent from November of 2016.

Unemployment Up from Previous Month But Down from Last Year in Starke, Pulaski Counties
Local unemployment rates are up from the previous month, but still better than the same period a year ago. Starke County’s unemployment rate rose to 4.6 percent in August from 4.1 percent in July, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. The change was similar in Pulaski County, where the August rate was four percent, compared to 3.4 percent the previous month.
Unemployment Rates Up from Previous Month, Down from Last Year
Unemployment rates were a bit higher in July than the month before, but still better than the same period last year. Starke County’s rate climbed to four percent last month, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development. That’s a half a percent higher than June, but a full percentage point lower than July of 2016.

April unemployment rates were lower in Starke and Pulaski counties than the previous month, but higher compared to the same period a year ago. January Report Shows Increase in Unemployment Rates
Starke County returned to the top 10 in terms of unemployment in January.
Ron Gifford from the Starke County Economic Development Foundation said that all 92 counties went up by an average of 1.1% per county, but the state as a whole only went up 0.1%. Starke County reported an unemployment rate of 9.0 percent and was ranked seventh in the state. Pulaski County had an employment rate of 6.3 percent and ranked 52nd in the state. Marshall County reported 6.2 percent.
Starke County Unemployment Rate Explained
The unemployment rate for the state and for individual counties was released this week.
The rate in Starke County dropped a point, according to the April statistics. The rate is 6.9 percent which is a 1.3 percent decrease. Starke County still ranks in the top ten in unemployment. All 92 counties reported a decrease in the unemployment rate.
March Unemployment Figures Released
Starke County’s unemployment rate dropped .5% from February to March, but the county is still tied with Lawrence county as the fifth highest in the state.
Starke County’s rate went from 11.3% to 10.8%. Other counties in the top 5 are Vermillion at 12.1%, which is highest in the state, Fayette, Tipton, and Newton.
Unemployment Rates Remain Steady
Indiana’s labor force increased by 13,600 in November, holding the state’s unemployment rate steady at 9.0%. Over the past four months, the state’s workforce has grown by almost 50,000. While Indiana saw a 0.4% increase in its labor force during the month, the U.S. labor force decreased by 0.2% percent in November, contributing to the decline in the nation’s unemployment rate from 9.0% to 8.6%.
Indiana Unemployment Up in June
The State’s unemployment rate increased slightly in June. It inched up from 8.2% to 8.3%. Indiana, though, is still below the national average of 9.2%.
Starke County moved into the number five unemployment slot with the June report. Starke has an unemployment rate of 10.3%. That’s up slightly from the May report.
Monthly Unemployment Data Released
Starke County’s unemployment rate stayed unchanged in December. The figures were released Tuesday and Starke County has moved from 7th to 5th place of the top unemployment counties. The Starke County rate is still 11.3% and is only eclipsed by Elkhart, Fayette, Vermillion, and Noble counties.
Davies county has the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 5.3%
