North Judson residents are mourning the sudden death of a lifelong resident and longtime public servant. Town Marshal Doug Vessely died Friday morning at a South Bend Hospital following a brief illness. Resident Bill Crase brought up the possibility of getting grant funding for a new community center during Monday’s town council meeting. North Judson will have a new clerk-treasurer in January. Democrat Alicia Collins beat incumbent Republican Donna Henry by a six-point margin, while incumbent North Judson Council President Wendy Hoppe fended off a challenge from Democrat Joan Haugh to hold onto her seat. Construction is scheduled to begin Saturday, Aug. 9 on Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity’s fifth home. It will be located at 712 South West Street in Winamac. Work will take place on Saturdays until the home is finished. Volunteers are needed to help with construction, clean up and meal preparation for the work crew. Construction volunteers must be 16 or older. On-site supervisors will provide hands-on training, so prior building experience is not a requirement. Tools will be provided, or volunteers may bring their own. Continue reading
North Judson will soon be the host of the Indiana Association of Cities and Towns quarterly roundtable.
Clerk-Treasurer Donna Henry says she and town board president Wendy Hoppe had attended the previous roundtable in Demotte in August, and she says each roundtable has a different topic. The August roundtable was focused on budgets, and Henry says she asked the organization if the North Judson Town Board could hold one of the upcoming roundtables in North Judson.
Starke County Economic Development Foundation Board Member Wendy Hoppe has been named the recipient of a Northwest Indiana Most Influential Woman Award, presented at the Radisson Hotel in Merrillville on May 31.
This was the second year for such awards, with Hoppe being named as the Most Influential Woman in the category of construction.
This is the second year a SCEDF Board member has won an award. Diane Thalman, vice president, was the inaugural winner in the 2011 category of Most Influential Woman in Economic Development.
Wendy Hoppe is currently the North Judson Town Council president for 2012. She was the first licensed female plumbing contractor in Indiana. Wendy is well known at the state level and is sometimes the subject of referrals when other females inquire about the possibility of obtaining a plumbing license.
Her next goal is to hold classes for females in the community to learn the basics of plumbing so that they might feel comfortable in performing some of the more routine tasks that they might face. Hoppe is in her eighth year on the Starke-Pulaski Habitat for Humanity Board of Directors.
The North Judson Town Board reorganized during the Board’s regular meeting on Monday night. Wendy Hoppe was elected Board President.
The Board appointed Wendy Hoppe to the Starke County Economic Development Foundation Board and Rich Akers was reappointed to the Park Board. The Board has many other appointments and re-appointments to make including the Board of Zoning Appeals, Planning Commission, Town Superintendent, Town Attorney, Building Inspector, Solid Waste Board, Emergency Board, and the Railroad Board.
Five Starke County Republican candidates successful in the November Municipal Election were sworn into office last night. Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall swore in City Court Judge Charles Hasnerl and he said his office will be busy in 2012.
“One of the primary issues that we’re dealing with, along with the City in working with the Council and the Mayor, is the financial issue and trying to come up with resources to cover the costs,” said Hasnerl. “It’s a needed service and we handle a number of cases for the entire county so that’s going to be our primary focus – not just this year, but throughout this term.”
The North Judson Town Board reorganized at its meeting on Monday night. Dan Anderson was retained as the Town Board President and Utility Superintendent, Cassandra Hines was appointed as the Town Attorney, Doug Vessely was retained as Town Marshal, and Steve Ransom was retained as the Building Inspector.
The North Town Board approved the second reading of an ordinance that prohibits the sale of synthetic marijuana during its meeting Monday night. A Public Hearing concerning this ordinance will be held on Monday, January 3rd, 2011 at 6:00 p.m. CT at the North Judson Civic Center. A third and final reading will be approved during the Board’s regular meeting that evening at 6:30 p.m. CT.
The Hoosier Valley Railroad Secretary, Mark Knebel, attended the recent North Judson Town Board meeting where he informed the Board that the 2011 grant applications have opened and they will be applying for a $235,000 grant. The
grant match is 41% which is $96,350. Co-Alliance and the Chesapeake and Indiana Railroad have agreed to pay half of the match if the town could pick up the other half which is $48,175. The Board agreed to pay that amount. The railroad staff hopes to complete more upgrades if awarded this grant.
