The Winamac Town Council does not appear to be loosening restrictions on golf carts in the near future. Three years after resident Nora Schambers asked council members to let small children ride in golf carts, she once again went before the town council last month.

A request to amend the Winamac golf cart policy was revisited by Town Council members when they met Monday night.
Council President Tom Murray noted that when resident Tony Calabrese came before the members during their first meeting in July, they said they would take his recommendation under consideration. Calabrese asked the council to consider adding utility vehicles, such as “Kubotas”, to the vehicles allowed on town roads.
Since they haven’t met since then, President Murray said they should discuss it during the special session to reach a consensus before their next official meeting. Continue reading
The ordinance regulating golf carts within the Town of Winamac was adopted with unanimous approval at Monday night’s town council meeting.
Town Attorney Justin Schramm mentioned that the addition of a registration fee deadline of January 31st was the only change made to the document since the last time council members looked over the ordinance. Specific stipulations about registration and operation as well as particular penalties are included in the ordinance.
There is a fee of $25 for each cart registered and the registration is effective for one year. All registration fees are deposited in the Winamac Police Department’s Continuing Education Fund. At the time of registration, the operator will be issued two numerical identification decals that should be affixed to the front and rear fender of the cart in areas where they’ll be visible when it is in operation. There are a few different ordinances up for consideration during tonight’s Winamac Town Council meeting.
During the Clerk-Treasurer’s report, an ordinance regulating golf carts and one establishing a Community Crossings grant fund will be discussed. Town Attorney Justin Schramm is scheduled to discuss salary and water rates ordinances. Continue reading
Winamac golf cart users will soon have to register their vehicles more frequently. The town council voted Monday to switch to a yearly registration system, rather than every two years.
Winamac resident Nora Schambers went before Winamac Town Council members Monday night asking them to consider amending the golf cart ordinance to allow small children ride in golf carts.
In Section 3-d of Winamac’s current golf cart ordinance it states that ‘no children under 48 lbs that require a child safety restraint seat are permitted to ride on a motorized cart’. Schambers asked the council to consider replacing that section with a rule that could potentially read ‘parents or guardians will use discretion and assume all liabilities associated with the injuries sustained by a child occupant under the weight of 48 lbs during the operation of a motorized cart on public roadways in the Town of Winamac’.
