Winamac Town Council Members Approve Economic Development Income Tax Plan With a Vote of 4-1

Winamac Town Council members reviewed an ordinance detailing the EDIT Plan for 2018 and 2019 when they met this week.

Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger explained that the EDIT Plan outlines proposed projects that will utilize county economic development income tax funds for the next two years.

Town Attorney Justin Schramm added that State Code requires towns to spend 75% of what they receive. He said the figures provided for 2019 were estimated since they do not currently know how much Winamac will receive that year. Schramm said for the 2019 amount, he reduced next year’s amount by 20 percent to present conservative figures just in case they receive less.

The three major projects presented in the plan are town infrastructure improvements which are estimated to cost approximately $50,000, town website construction which will purportedly cost $5,000 and an estimated $15,000 will be spent for grant administration. The total estimated cost for all three projects is $70,000.

The ordinance specifies that $49,928 is expected to be received in 2018 and Schramm estimated the 2019 amount to be $39,942.40, making a total of $89,870.40. The estimated cost of the projects is approximately 77 percent of the amount of EDIT money that will be distributed so the plan meets state specifications.

The ordinance was passed with a vote of 4-1, with Councilwoman Judy Heater opposing the plan because the town pool project was not included. Click the following link to view the full version of the  EDIT Plan for 2018 & 2019.
