Starke County Flood Updates for Saturday

High water is still being reported in several sections of Starke County. Many area parks are remaining closed until further notice and major flooding has been confirmed around the Yellow, Brown and Kankakee River bridges as well as in areas near Bass Lake and English Lake.

Starke County EMA Director J. Nier is encouraging residents to submit damage reports through the Indiana Department of Homeland Security website. Officials are collecting data to submit in order to potentially receive federal or state financial assistance with relief efforts. Any additional questions or concerns can be directed to Starke County EMA at 574-772-9182.

Starke County Highway Department representatives added there are few things that motorists can do can do to assist crews who are working on the flooding.

First, they’re asking people not linger around the flooded areas. Unneeded individuals on the scene can get in the way of the workers trying to mitigate the situation. Next, they want to remind people that barricades are there for a reason. There is never an excuse to drive around road closed barricades. Not only could you potentially injure yourself but your vehicle could sustain damage and if you get stuck your rescue will divert forces that are needed elsewhere.

Lastly, never move or take road closed signs and barricades. Officials report that over twenty signs have stolen over the last couple of days which is incredibly hazardous as a missing sign can endanger lives.

At a little after noon today,  representatives reported that seven roads have been reopened but there are still thirty-five miles of county roadway temporarily closed due to high water and nine more with temporary high water signs marking a flooded roadway.

The areas of flooding are changing as the rivers are rising, so if you know of any roads that should be reopened or one that should be closed, call the Starke County High way Department at 574-772-3011. Additional county road closing information can be found on the Starke county GIS Site while state road information can be accessed through INDOT’s road restrictions and closures page.
