Starke County Highway Crews Work on Winter Projects

Crews with the Starke County Highway Department are keeping busy in between snow events this winter.

Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler said they’ve been busy with maintenance on plow trucks and vehicles, plus a few other projects.

“Now we’re hauling in stone for our summer operations,” said Ritzler. “Each day this week we’ve also had someone out with the hot patch box for potholes. The potholes aren’t that bad, but it’s better to get them early when it’s about three or four inches wide as opposed to two feet. We’re also going to start sending out our brush chopper out soon to start chopping brush because the best time to chop brush is before the leaves start growing on the trees. You can really see how far back you can go. We really take advantage of these lull periods. There’s a tendency to want to relax for a couple of days, but if you do that then there ends up being more work in the long run.”

The highway department will be ready for when the snow comes back in the area. Snow is in the forecast for tomorrow.
