Knox Mayor Mentions Success of Spring Dumpster Days Event, Suggests Holding More than One During the Year

Knox Mayor Dennis Estok acknowledged the success of the Dumpster Days Spring Clean-Up event when the City Council met last Thursday.

According to skip hire Glasgow, a total of three dumpsters were utilized when the event was held on Saturday, May 19th and Sunday, May 20th.

Though the event was scheduled to run through 5 p.m. on Sunday, the mayor said they had to shut it down a little early because all of the rented dumpsters were filled up by 2 p.m. The mayor said another dumpster had to be brought in the following Monday to pick up the remaining debris that was left.

He noted that as overwhelming as it was that all the dumpsters filled up so fast, he was glad that residents were able to get rid of a plethora of unwanted items. He added that citizens also did a great job providing the required documentation to prove they lived within city limits.

He told members, “It kind of surprised us that we went through the dumpsters that quick but they were from the city. They brought in the necessary ID to show that they lived and paid a bill [in the city]. So I give the residents a lot of credit for using that service.”

The mayor also mentioned the possibility of holding a similar event in the fall. He said there are many other municipalities who do multiple clean-up events throughout the year.

Holding a clean-up event more than once a year could help reduce the number of dumpsters that are filled during one event and it would give residents another chance to remove any bulky debris from their property.

No official actions were taken on that suggestion, but it will be revisited at a future council meeting.
