State Police Issue Safety Tips for Drivers, Students As School Year Approaches

With many local students returning to class next week, Indiana State Police have issued a few safety tips. Drivers are reminded to watch for stopped school buses in the morning and afternoon, as well as children waiting at bus stops and walking to and from school.

When you drive in a school zone, follow the speed limit, never pass other vehicles, and obey the signals of crossing guards. Never text while driving and avoid talking on a cell phone.

Students riding the bus should arrive at the bus stop at least five minutes before the bus is scheduled to get there and stay out of the street while waiting. Those walking to school should leave home early enough to arrive at least 10 minutes before school starts. It’s also best for students to walk in a group, use the same route every day, and stay on public sidewalks and designated crosswalks.

Student drivers are reminded not to use cell phones, carry extra passengers, or speed.
