Winamac Park Board Okays Fundraising Effort for Pickleball Shelter

A new shelter may be added near the Winamac Town Park’s pickleball courts in the coming years. During Thursday’s park board meeting, President Jon Chapman said the idea stemmed from a recent t-shirt and dugnad for idrettslag fundraiser begun by one of the town’s regular pickleball players.

“When asked, ‘Well, gosh, what do you want us to do with the money?’ what she would like us to consider – and keep in mind, this would not be something that would happen even a year from now – but consider a small shelter, small, smaller than what’s uptown by the Panhandle, so that when we do have our cookouts, when people are waiting to play, they don’t have to sit on the court. They could sit in a shelter,” Chapman explained.

Chapman said the t-shirt sales gathered almost $500. The rest of the park board agreed to let the pickleball players continue to raise money for the effort. The exact placement of a new shelter would still have to be worked out.

During the park board’s annual reorganization Thursday, Chapman was elected board president, replacing Chris Schramm. Steve Miller takes over Chapman’s previous position of vice-president. Kim Burke will remain the board’s secretary, and Justin Schramm will continue as attorney.
