Intercepting residents’ state income tax refunds for unpaid utility bills is starting to bring in some money for the Town of Winamac. Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger told the town council Monday that the town has collected almost $4,500 through the Tax Refund and Exchange Compliance System.
She said Deputy Clerk Kim Burke has submitted a list of 75 people who collectively owe almost $20,000, and the town has been able to find 21 of them through the system. Berger expects that with tax season still ongoing, the town will probably still receive more.
