A heat wave has its grip in Northern Indiana and Knox Mayor Dennis Estok wants to remind residents to keep pets safe while outdoors.
He encourages residents to protect animals with a structure outside to get away from direct sun exposure. Pets should be able to stand, sit and lie down without restrictions in a safe and sanitary manner. Food and water should be available at all times.
Do not leave an animal unattended in a vehicle during a heat wave.
Mayor Estok says a current ordinance in the City of Knox gives the municipality the right to enforce the humane treatment of animals. If animal owners are found to be in violation of the terms of the ordinance, citations will be issued and enforced.
