The Town of Winamac’s 2021 budget was recently approved by the town council. The total budget adds up to more than $1.3 million. Just over $973,000 of that is the General Fund. More than $135,000 is budgeted for parks, and $65,000 is in the Motor Vehicle Highway Fund. Winamac’s 2021 budget now goes to the state for final approval.
Still, there are a few things that Council President Tom Murray said he’d like to revisit, such as the town’s annual $2,000 contribution to Pulaski County Human Services. “I don’t feel it’s our responsibility to support that place,” he said. “I mean, we need to save wherever we can save in our budgets because of what we’ve got going on. But that’s just a thought, something to think about.”
Murray also had some suggestions for the 2021 salary ordinance, including cutting the park board secretary’s salary and keeping outgoing Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger as a part-time employee to help with the transition.
In other business last month, council members approved the necessary documents to let the town accept its $75,000 share of federal CARES Act funding distributed by the state. They also agreed to try to use about $1,200 of that to try to buy a new laptop and software from DeGroot Technology. Berger said that would allow her replacement, Kendra Craft, to start working on things from home.
Craft was unopposed for the Winamac Clerk-Treasurer’s office in Tuesday’s election.
