The death of a LaPorte County Jail inmate is under investigation. The Sheriff’s Office says Joel L. Ohms, 45, was found unresponsive in his cell Tuesday. Jail staff reportedly began resuscitation efforts, and LaPorte County EMS took him to Northwest Health – LaPorte. He was pronounced dead just before 7:30 a.m.
The Sheriff’s Office says Ohms self-surrendered Monday evening “and began serving the first of a series of one-day sentences through Superior Court IV.” He was scheduled to be released Tuesday at 6:00 p.m.
The Indiana State Police Criminal Investigations Division was called in to investigate, with Sheriff’s Office detectives and the LaPorte County Coroner’s Office assisting.
