The North Judson Town Council members heard from Town Marshal Kelly Fisher who requested the move of a part-time officer to a full-time officer.
Marshal Fisher noted that the request was prompted by the resignation of an officer that just completed the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy and decided to go to work for the Starke County Sheriff’s Office.
The town council asked about the town’s cost to send the officer to attend the Academy, about $16,000, and how they could possibly be reimbursed for that amount. Marshal Fisher said that it was the opinion of the merit board that the town should be reimbursed.
Town Attorney Justin Schramm noted that the officer did not sign an agreement that would keep him at the department for an amount of time after he successfully completed the Academy as a condition of his employment with the department, as that agreement was approved by the council after he began his 16-week training at the Academy. However, the issue will be researched.
The North Judson Town Council did unanimously approve the resignation of the officer during their December 4 meeting, and unanimously agreed to move the part-time officer to full-time officer upon the signing of a contract.
