The Culver Town Council members will have several items up for discussion when they meet tonight.

Bill Clevenger from the Culver-Union Township Public Library will appear before the council with information. The council will receive an update on the Stellar Communities application and letter of intent. The deadline for the letter of intent is set for April 28.

Culver Stellar Communities Committee Finalizing Letter of Intent

The Culver Stellar Communities Committee is working hard to complete paperwork necessary to announce the Town of Culver’s intentions to seek this year’s Stellar Community designation.

The purpose of the Stellar Communities Designation Program is to recognize Indiana’s smaller communities that have identified comprehensive community and economic development projects and activities in addition to a plan and key partnerships. Culver was close to winning the designation of a Stellar Community last year, but the honor was awarded to Corydon.

Stellar Communities Committee to Meet Today

Officials involved in the application for the Stellar Communities Program designation will meet today to discuss several aspects of the application process.

The committee will review potential lighter, quicker and cheaper projects as required in this year’s application. These are projects that are smaller in scale and less than $5,000. The committee will decide on which projects to include in the application tonight.

Be Aware of Construction Workers in Work Zones

April marks the beginning of the highway construction season. The Indiana Department of Transportation urges motorists to slow down in construction zones.

This will be a busy road construction season. INDOT will oversee more than 300 construction contracts totaling more than $1 billion in capital investment. Pavement resurfacing will encompass 3,047 miles. Work will focus on improving traffic mobility and safety. Dozens of interchanges and intersections will be improved across the state. INDOT and its contractors will also rehabilitate or construct 486 bridges and small structures.

Culver School Board Moves Forward in Superintendent Search

The Culver Community School Board is moving ahead with finding another superintendent.

Interim Superintendent Chuck Kitchell is leaving the corporation and entering retirement on June 30. He has been with the Culver Community School Corporation for 28 years in various roles: teaching, coach, assistant principal, principal, and director of operations. Kitchell assumed the interim superintendent’s position at the end of December 2015 when then-superintendent Vicki McGuire resigned to fill a similar position at a different school corporation.

Culver Park Department Preparing for Summer Season

Summer is right around the corner which means activities around the Culver Park and the Culver Beach will be winding up for the season.

Park Superintendent Anna Campbell told the Culver Town Council members last week that she recently hired a new maintenance employee and she is currently taking applications for lifeguards. Meals to be Served at Culver Schools This Week

The cafeteria staff at the Culver Community School Corporation has been busy during this spring break to offer children healthy meals.

Carin Clifton, Food Services Director at the Culver schools, said about 10 children a day were served breakfast while up to 25 children took advantage of lunch during last week’s first week of spring break.

Progress Moves Forward on Culver Bike and Pedestrian Trail

Lake Maxinkuckee beach in Culver

One project that the Culver Town Council and the Stellar Communities Committee is focused on is a bike and pedestrian trail around Lake Maxinkuckee.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist said the project began with creating a master plan last year with consulting firm Troyer Group for the trail to be funded if the town was named a Stellar Community. The idea is to create a scenic trail around the lake with the ability to accommodate walkers, runners and bicyclists as a way for residents to get some exercise and see the town from a different perspective.

Culver Town Council Keeps Stellar Communities Project Rolling

The Culver Town Council continues to move forward with an application to the Stellar Communities Program.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist reported that he and Council President Ginny Bess Munroe have split up responsibilities to process the letter of intent which is due Friday, April 28. That five page document will be reviewed by the Stellar Communities committee on Tuesday, April 4 at 5:30 p.m. at the Culver Town Hall. The meeting is open to any resident interested in being a part of the committee.

Culver Town Council Approves Tax Abatement Request

A public hearing to hear comments concerning a tax abatement request from Elkay Products was held last night during the Culver Town Council meeting.

Owner Brian Meek is planning a technology upgrade at the facility at a cost of approximately $3.9 million. More jobs will be created as a result of the upgrade in equipment. Meek said this project will help make the Culver Elkay plant the leading manufacturer of cabinets within the corporation. He said there is an Elkay facility in Minnesota where the company has made a similar investment.
