Pulaski County Plan Commission to Continue Discussing Wind Turbine Regulations Tonight
Pulaski County’s wind turbine regulations will continue to be discussed by the advisory plan commission tonight. Members have been working on updates to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance, to address concerns over a proposed wind farm. They had hoped to have some proposed changes narrowed down after a work session last month, but they still had some questions about what impact wind turbines would have on wells, drainage tiles, private airports, and migratory birds.

Culver School Board Updated on Funding Concerns
Declining enrollment and state funding continue to cause concerns for the Culver Community Schools Corporation. In an update to the school board last week, Corporation Treasurer Casey Howard said that enrollment was about 1,073 students during the 2009-2010 school year. She said it’s now just under 739 students.
Eastern Pulaski School Board to Consider New School Fundraising Policies
The Eastern Pulaski School Board will soon consider updates to the school corporation’s fundraising policies, but whether community members should be allowed to donate sports uniforms is a topic of debate. Three proposed policies were presented during a recent school board meeting.

The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office is transferring ownership of some unneeded equipment. The county commissioners Monday authorized Sheriff Jeff Richwine to sell some heavy-duty police vests.
Culver School Board Approves Recreation Easement Agreement for Cavalier Sports Park
The development of Culver’s Cavalier Sports Park cleared another procedural hurdle Monday. The Culver School Board approved a recreation easement agreement. “That is the park that is being developed out here through the Stellar Designation for the Town of Culver and Union Township,” School Superintendent Karen Shuman explained. “Both of them have put money toward developing that park. They just need our easement agreement to make those improvements.”
Eastern Pulaski School Board Recognizes Valedictorian, Salutatorian
Winamac High School’s valedictorian and salutatorian were recognized by the Eastern Pulaski School Board last week. Valedictorian Miranda Hettinger told board members she plans to go to St. Mary’s College, where she’ll major in computing and applied math and play softball. Salutatorian Lera Good said she plans to study English and creative writing at Valparaiso University.
Proposed Policy Updates Presented to Knox School Board
The Knox School Board will soon be considering updates to policies regarding child abuse and employee background checks, among several others. Last week, Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart presented board members with a list of proposed changes recommended by policy consultant NEOLA.
Hamlet Council Approves $1,000 Donation to Yellowstone Trail Fest
The Town of Hamlet is once again chipping in to help with the Yellowstone Trail Fest. The town council approved a $1,000 donation Tuesday, to sponsor the festival’s bounce house, as it has in past years.

Hamlet’s Starke Street Project Moving Ahead
The main portion of Hamlet’s Starke Street rehabilitation project is expected to get underway in the next couple of weeks. Project engineer Lee Nagai told the town council Tuesday that he’s asked paving contractor Walsh & Kelly to wait until after this Friday to get to work. “Between school being out and whatnot, I thought it would be better,” he said. “I mean, it’s already late because of the weather, so we’ll just wait until school’s over and hopefully, they can get started either next week or the following week.”

DNR Finds No Flood Control Violations Near Starke County Forest
The Starke County Forest appears to have been absolved from blame for flooding concerns in the local area. A letter from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources was presented to the Starke County Park Board last week. In it, an engineer in the department’s compliance and enforcement section addressed concerns apparently raised by a neighboring property owner.
Convicted Murderer, Child Molester Found Not Guilty of Failure to Register As a Sex Offender
A convicted murderer and child molester has been found not guilty of failure to register as a sex offender. The Northwest Indiana Times says Richard Dobeski was cleared of the charges last week by Starke Circuit Court Judge Kim Hall following a bench trial. The case had been moved out of LaPorte County.
LaPorte County Police Seek Public’s Help in Finding Armed Robbery Suspect
LaPorte County Police are asking for the public’s help in finding an armed robbery suspect. Maurice J. Williams, 25, is wanted on an active arrest warrant, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Police believe he robbed Next Door Foods on U.S. 12 near Michigan City on April 28.
Pulaski County Commissioners Vote to Pay Taxes, Late Fees, to Finalize Medaryville Blight Elimination Project
Pulaski County is putting the finishing touches on last year’s blight elimination project. The county got a grant from the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority to tear down a dilapidated Medaryville home. Hamlet Council Addresses Concerns over Recent ‘Gentleman’s Club’ Discussion
Hamlet Town Council members stress that a so-called “gentleman’s club” will probably not be in the town’s future. Earlier this month, local business owner George Filip asked council members if there were any rules prohibiting a particular property from being used for that purpose.
Knox School Board Accepts Funds from Starke County Community Foundation
The Knox School Board last week accepted nearly $3,700 in funding from the Starke County Community Foundation. Just under $3,500 of that was a regular payout from the Knox Community School Corporation Student Scholarship/Presentation Fund, according to Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart. “That’s the interest that we earn off of that, and we use that, then, for presentations,” he said. “So I was not aware that that fund existed.”
Culver School Board Approves Use of Bond Money to Remodel Entrance, Restrooms at Middle/High School
Upgrades to Culver Community Middle/High School will soon be able to move ahead. The school board voted Monday to use bond money to move the main entrance and office to where the school’s library currently is. Board member Mark Maes commented that the new arrangement would be a big upgrade, both for safety and aesthetics. Some of the bond money will also be used to remodel the restrooms across from the high school gym.
