The Culver Community Schools Corporation is gearing up for a possible operating referendum this November. The school board decided Monday to hire some outside help with the process.
Pulaski County EMS continues to deny most ambulance transfer requests from Pulaski Memorial Hospital, but EMS Director Bryan Corn expects that to change, as new paramedics are added to the department. He told the county commissioners Monday that his department denied all but one of the hospital’s 10 transfer requests during the month of April. Pulaski County EMS has decided not to take transfers when there’s only one paramedic on duty.
Repairs to the Bass Lake Beach House seawall are getting underway. The Starke County Park Board has been working with Bass Lake Beach operator Callahan Development, LLC, as well as the County Highway Department, to fix the wall and try to prevent future damage.
The Culver Town Council will consider the next step for the proposed Culver Meadows development. It would consist of about 25 single family homes and townhouses, as well as a new gas station in the area of State Road 10 and State Road 17. During tonight’s meeting, council members will consider an ordinance on second and third reading to rezone the property to a Planned Unit Development.
Pulaski County Human Services will not be getting a funding boost from the county. Executive Director Jacki Frain asked the county council last week for another $10,000, after the organization was only budgeted to get $30,000 in county funding this year. While that’s the same amount that Human Services got last year, Frain said it’s about $15,000 less than what it traditionally got in the past.
Local school officials are learning more about the upcoming change in the school funding structure. Under a new law set to take effect in 2019, Indiana school districts’ General Fund will be replaced by an Education Fund, supported by the state. The Capital Projects, Transportation, and Bus Replacement funds will be combined into an Operations Fund, supported by tax revenues in the school district.
Repairs to the Bass Lake Beach gate house have begun. The structure was seriously damaged when a pickup truck reportedly crashed into it back in November.
Keeping students safe continues to be a big concern in area schools. Indiana State Police visited Eastern Pulaski Schools last month to give teachers some classroom safety tips, according to Superintendent Dan Foster.
The Culver School Board will continue preparing for a possible operational referendum tonight. Agreements with accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates and law firm Ice Miller to help with the referendum process will be up for approval. An operational referendum is designed to help a school corporation supplement its General Fund, which pays for things like teacher salaries.
The Pulaski County Commissioners will get updates from several department heads this morning. Building Inspector Doug Hoover is scheduled to discuss a blight tax issue, while Highway Superintendent Terry Ruff is expected to discuss County Road 1150 and present an annual report. Continue reading
A stretch of public land along the Koontz Lake shoreline may get some maintenance help from the Starke County Park Board.
More than $1.4 million in additional appropriations that were requested back in February were finally approved by the Pulaski County Council this week. The bulk of that was to allow the County Highway Department to spend Community Crossings grant funds on bridge and paving projects. Continue reading
The Hamlet Town Council may soon be reevaluating the police department’s vehicle needs, amid ongoing problems with its Ford Taurus.
LaPorte County Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a non-compliant sex offender. Darell L. Eckwood is wanted for two felony counts of failure to register as a sex offender, according to the Sheriff’s Office. He’s considered a serious sex offender with residency restrictions, after police say he was convicted of child molestation back in 2011.
With construction underway on a new elevator at the Pulaski County Courthouse, the county council is working to come up with a way to pay for it. Auditor Laura Wheeler told council members Monday that while they had agreed to cover the cost, they had never actually decided which fund that money would come out of.

A drop in state funding has Knox school officials looking at alternatives to summer school.
The Oregon-Davis School Corporation was able to put some unneeded money into its Rainy Day Fund this week. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says a fund transfer resolution was approved by the school board Monday. “We transferred $75,000 from our Transportation Fund to our Rainy Day Fund,” he explains.
