Winamac’s second annual Town Park cleanup day was a success, according to Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo. He says about 38 people took part in the event on April 28. “I appreciate all they did taking up their Saturday morning to come down to the park and pick up sticks and do landscaping and clean up,” he told the park board last week.

Crude Oil Costs Keep Pushing Gas Prices Higher, but a Peak May be Near

 

Gas prices may be reaching a peak, but the cost of crude oil continues to cause concerns. “We’re very close to putting the worst days behind us,” says GasBuddy.com Senior Petroleum Analyst Patrick DeHaan, “though gas prices probably will still stay in the upper two-dollar range this summer, which is likely to be the highest since 2014.”

Pool Project Won’t Be Included in Winamac Park Board’s Grant Application This Year

The Winamac Park Board reiterated Thursday that it will not apply for a grant for the town’s swimming pool project this year. The town has put the project on hold, due to concerns that money wouldn’t be available to run the pool if it’s built. The Winamac Pool Committee has proposed a cheaper option, but so far, it hasn’t gotten the official support of the town council.

Early Voting Continues Through Monday

Local voters have a few more chances to cast their ballots early, ahead of next week’s primary. In-person absentee voting continues today from 8:00 a.m. to noon and 1:00 to 6:00 p.m. at the Starke County Courthouse in Knox. Pulaski County residents may vote today at either the Pulaski County Justice Center in Winamac or the Francesville Fire Station from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. and 1:30 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Governor Requests Federal Assistance for Starke, Marshall Counties, Following Flood Damage

A request for a major disaster declaration for areas hit by February’s floods now heads to President Donald Trump. If approved, the declaration could open the door to grant funding for home and business owners in nine Indiana counties, including Marshall and St. Joseph. That could include money for temporary housing, home repairs, and loans from the Small Business Administration.

Starke County Youth Club Radiothon Friday

WKVI listeners will once again have the chance to support fun and educational programs for local children. The Starke County Youth Club’s annual radiothon is this Friday from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. “The Starke County Youth Club is a youth development agency supporting children and families with after-school, summer, and recreational programs,” explains Executive Director Irene Szakonyi. “So that means we have programs all across the county during the after-school hours and across the summer, where we provide personal and academic support to kids and their families.”

Pulaski County Plan Commission to Research Changes to Unified Development Ordinance Tonight

The Pulaski County Advisory Plan Commission will begin working on updates to the county’s Unified Development Ordinance tonight. Concerns about a possible wind farm development have led county officials to consider reviewing the county’s zoning regulations. Pulaski County has recently hired an attorney who specializes in wind energy to help with the process.

Oregon-Davis School Board Updated on Elementary School’s Minds in Motion Program

The Oregon-Davis School Board learned about a physical education initiative taking place at the elementary school. Board members got an update Monday on the school’s Minds in Motion program, according to Superintendent Dr. Don Harman. “It really is what the title means, ‘Minds in Motion,'” Harman says. “The students do different activities before they go into their PE class. It’s how they start the PE class, is doing different activities related to balance, coordination, and things like that.”

Pulaski County Little League Plans Field Upgrades, New Scoreboard

Winamac’s Little League field will soon be getting some upgrades. Waylon Burke with the Pulaski County Little League told the Winamac Park Board Monday that the league plans to hire a contractor to rehabilitate the baseball diamond. “That is all new infield, digging up home plate, digging up the pitcher’s mound, digging all the bases out, re-anchoring everything,” he said.
