The Knox Community School Corporation may soon be looking into some facility upgrades.
Hamlet’s Street Department is getting a new truck. The town council voted Wednesday to buy a 2017 GMC Sierra 3500 HD with a dump bed from Schepel Buick GMC in Merrillville. The total cost is $41,351. However, council members decided to purchase a snow plow for the truck separately.
Snack food producer Gary Poppins is moving closer to starting operations in the former Stelrema building north of Knox. But Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver now says it probably won’t happen until 2018. Continue reading
The Pulaski County Commissioners have again taken action to approve a Winamac restaurant’s revolving loan request. Tippy’s has been asking for financing to help cover the cost of moving to a larger space. The county commissioners had conditionally approved the request twice already, but each time, it had to be changed to address various concerns.
Several Knox school administrators will be getting a raise, following action by the school board Monday. “The board approved raises for administrators from anywhere between zero up to $2,000,” says Superintendent Dr. William Reichhart,” depending upon the administrator and the evaluation that was done on that particular administrator.”
The future of Winamac’s swimming pool rebuilding effort will be discussed during an informational meeting this evening. It starts at 5:30 EST at the Pulaski County Public Library in Winamac.
Pulaski County may be reviving its courthouse security efforts, after a recent spike in violence. Circuit Court Judge Michael Shurn told the county commissioners Monday that a courtroom fight between attorneys last week was especially alarming. Continue reading
Organizations working to improve local waterways can apply for up to $50,000 in federal matching grants. The Five Star and Urban Waters Restoration Grant Program gives local governments, schools, and non-profit organizations money to improve water quality and enhance the habitat for local wildlife. Additionally, projects must engage the public, have measurable results, involve at least five partner organizations, and include a plan to sustain the project beyond the grant period.
Pulaski County has fired its emergency medical services director, over concerns that she used county money on personal expenses. The county commissioners voted unanimously Monday to terminate the employment of Nikki Lowry, effective immediately.

Railroad Township appears to have a new township board member. Roger Chaffins Sr. has been appointed to the position by Starke County Democratic Party Chair Kenny Wallace. Chaffins replaces Board President Gus Eckert, who resigned.
Plans for the Winamac Town Park’s new restrooms will be discussed during a special park board meeting Thursday. Board members plan to detail some of the design elements with architect Mark Maddox, according to Board President Courtney Poor. Continue reading

Forty-eight dead trees have been cut down in the Winamac Town Park during the latest round of tree removal. Last month, the town’s park board voted to pay Practical Tree Service up to $12,600 for the work.
The Pulaski County Commissioners are expected to continue their discussion of the county’s revolving loan program when they meet tonight. Last month, the commissioners conditionally approved a scaled-back request from Tippy’s. The Winamac restaurant is asking for financing to help move to a larger location.
But the number of steps required to get a loan led to some questions about how the program should operate going forward. A measure to freeze loans in the revolving loan program until January is scheduled to be considered during tonight’s meeting. Continue reading

Some local school corporations saw their letter grades improve slightly, while others remained flat. On Wednesday, the Indiana State Board of Education finalized the A-to-F grades for each of the state’s school corporations for the 2016-2017 school year.
