Water and sewer rate hikes were approved by the North Judson Town Council Monday. The average sewer bill will go up 25 percent or just over nine dollars, according to accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates. Water bills will increase by 30 percent or $4.60, on average. A longtime law enforcement officer will soon be in charge of code enforcement for the City of Knox. Kenny Pfost has been appointed as the city’s director of building and code compliance by Mayor Dennis Estok. Pfost will also serve as planning administrator, following action by the Knox Plan Commission Tuesday.
The former Pleasant View Rest Home has been sold to an out-of-county resident. Tristan Clark bought the property at auction Saturday for $26,000. The Pulaski County Commissioners voted Monday to finalize the sale and sign the contracts.
The Town of Winamac continues to try to keep up with dying ash trees in the Town Park. Several have been cut down in the past year or so, but Park Manager Dave DeLorenzo estimates that about 75 remain.
The Town of North Judson continues making preparations for the demolition of 205 and 207 Lane Street, but a few steps remain, before the building can be removed. A structural report by engineering firm DLZ found the building to be in “critical condition” and unsafe for entry.
The Knox Plan Commission will consider the replacement of the city’s planning administrator during tonight’s meeting.
The Winamac Park Board is looking for the public’s input on proposed upgrades to Veterans Memorial Park. Board members have been considering the addition of a decorative archway, and the VFW and American Legion have each offered to donate a bench. On top of that, the American Legion has offered to place its cannon in the park, should it decide to sell its current building.
The LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office is still putting the pieces together, after a series of crashes kept deputies busy over the weekend. On Sunday, police responded to County Road 950 West, after a vehicle apparently crashed into a barricade where the road dead ends at Interstate 94. A man with serious head injuries was found lying next to the car.
The resignation of Town Marshal John Ramos, utility rate hikes, and curbside recycling will all be discussed during tonight’s North Judson Town Council meeting.
The Pulaski County Fairgrounds will soon get updated restrooms. Organizers of the Pulaski County 4-H Fair and Northern Indiana Power from the Past told the Winamac Park Board last week they plan to work together to improve accessibility at the facilities. Continue reading
Winamac officials are optimistic that the town will be able to get a $200,000 grant to rebuild its swimming pool. Moving Starke County Forward’s fifth annual Get Moving Challenge is now underway. Starke County Walks to the National Parks in America began on Memorial Day and continues through Labor Day. Community members are encouraged to walk, run, bike, or take part in any physical activity of their choice. Participants can then log their miles for a chance to win prizes.
Free meals will be available this summer to children in the North Judson area. As part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program, the North Judson-San Pierre School Corporation will offer breakfast and lunch at the elementary school.
Renting Hamlet’s park facilities will soon cost you a bit more. The park board voted Wednesday to charge $25 to rent a pavilion, along with restroom access. Five dollars will be refunded when the restroom key is returned to the town hall. Up until now, Hamlet only charged a $10 refundable deposit for pavilion rental.
