Two Sentenced in Starke Circuit Court in Battery Case

Two teenagers were sentenced in Starke Circuit Court yesterday for their involvement in a battery incident in May that left a man unconscious at times.

Daily James Potter and Jamal Green pleaded guilty to a charge of Theft in an incident where Potter and Green, plus two adult suspects John Potter and Brenan Sanchez, allegedly beat and kicked a Monterey man. Daily James Potter and Jamal Green stated in court that they were not involved in the battery but rather the theft of $400 in cash, a knife and prescription medication. They reached into the victim’s pockets, after he was on the ground after being battered, and took the money and a weekly pill container that contained several prescription medications.

Pulaski Co. Youth Organizations to Trick-or-Treat for Food Pantry

The Pulaski County Junior Leaders and the Winamac Community High School Sunshine Society will be doing a different kind of trick-or-treating on Thursday, Oct. 25.

Members of both organizations will be trick-or-treating for canned goods for the Pulaski County Food Pantry. They will be traveling around the Winamac, Francesville and Medaryville communities picking up canned food items from residents between 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. ET, so leave your items outside on the step if you wish or you can give your donation to the volunteers when they come to the door.

If you know you will not be home that night and would like to donate, you may drop off your canned goods at the Pulaski County Extension Office by Oct. 26.

Last year, over 1,000 pounds of food were donated to the Pulaski County Human Services food pantry.

Public Comments to be Heard Today Concerning Operating Hours at Hamlet Post Office

A meeting will be held today at the Hamlet Town Hall to gather public comment on the United States Postal Service’s POST plan. The POST plan is a review process of certain Post Offices which includes the Hamlet facility.

Four Arrested after Knox Police Find Active Meth Lab

Four people were arrested late last night after the Starke County Dispatch Center received a phone call of individuals manufacturing methamphetamine at a residence.

Knox City Police officers arrived at 406 E. John Street and took two people into custody on outstanding warrants. The pair were transported to the Starke County Jail and when police returned to the residence, an active methamphetamine lab was located inside the residence. Two more people were arrested after further investigation into the incident.

Winamac Man Arrested For Threatening People With a Gun

A Winamac man was arrested Thursday after allegedly threatening the lives of two people with a gun.

Pulaski County police were called to Kit Matthes’ residence after a 911 hang-up/open line phone call was made to the dispatch center. Police arrived at 2979 North County Road 800 West and found Matthes, who said two people were in the house with him. Officers noted that Matthes was acting like he was intoxicated on a controlled substance.

USPS Undergoes Some Pricing Changes

A number of changes have been made to the pricing for First-Class single-piece letters and domestic flat rate shipping products through the United States Postal Service.

Mary Dando, head of corporate communications for the Greater Indiana District of the USPS, explained that most First-Class stamps are now Forever stamps, and those that have already been purchased will still be good even after the change in pricing takes effect Jan. 27. Also beginning early next year, the Postal Service will offer a First-Class Mail Global Forever Stamp, which Dando explained will allow customers to mail letters anywhere in the world for one set price of $1.10.

Winamac High School Weatherbug System to Be Repaired, Upgraded

Besides the technology upgrades in the classroom at Eastern Pulaski schools, Superintendent Dr. Robert Klitzman said they are also working on upgrading a lesser-known device: the Weatherbug system atop the school. Klitzman said the weather station had been damaged by this summer’s strong, damaging winds, and the corporation’s insurance company will be funding its repairs.

“The nice thing about this weather station is it’s on top of our high school, so in terms of the readings for temperature, wind direction, wind speed, humidity, all that is right here in Winamac and right now it’s not working. The camera is not working, so we need to repair that,” said Klitzman.

IU Health LaPorte and Starke hospitals are offering discounted screening mammograms throughout the entire month of October.

The baseline screening mammogram is exclusively offered for $95 at IU Health LaPorte Hospital, IU Health Diagnostic Imaging at Lifeplex in Plymouth, IU Medical Offices at Lifeworks Business Park in Michigan City, and IU Health Starke Hospital in Knox.

Marshall County Police Make Two Drug Arrests

Arthur Lawrence of Plymouth was arrested Thursday, Oct. 4 after Marshall County deputies responded to his residence with an active arrest warrant for Dealing/Delivering/Manufacturing Methamphetamine. A search warrant was also executed where officers found more narcotics, several “one pot” meth labs, meth, and meth paraphernalia

The Indiana State Police Clandestine Lab Team was called to the home in the 1700 block of Ritter Street in Plymouth and took possession of all of the hazardous materials.

Charles Weaver of Winamac Sentenced For Trafficking

A Winamac man was sentenced in Pulaski Circuit Court on two amended charges of Trafficking with an Inmate, a Class A Misdemeanor.

Charles A. Weaver of Winamac was arrested in February 2011 on a Class C Felony charge of Trafficking with an Inmate, but it was later amended to two misdemeanor counts. Weaver pleaded guilty to those charges in a plea agreement and Judge Michael Shurn sentenced him to one year incarceration on each count to be served consecutively.

Giant Pumpkin Weigh-in at Hensler Nursery

The winner of the 2012 Giant Pumpkin Contest at Hensler Nursery is John Barenie from Griffith, IN with his contest-winning 1,233 pound pumpkin. John had a clean pumpkin sweep this summer winning his local Lake County Fair, the Indiana State Fair and the Indiana Pumpkin Growers Association contest hosted at Hensler Nursery. Barenie still holds the record for largest pumpkin grown in Indiana with his 1,308 pound pumpkin which won the recognition at the Grower Association contest hosted at Hensler Nursery in 2011. In 2011, Barenie began his string of victories winning first at the Indiana State Fair, and then at the Hensler contest.

Wythogan Park Still Undergoing Repairs

Though the park is open, work is still being done to restore Wythogan Park in Knox to its former glory. Park Superintendent George Byer said the majority of stumps and trees have been removed, but approximately 50 stumps that were uprooted by the storms still need to be taken out.

Byer said these stumps will be split between the street department and a contractor, with each taking 25 stumps from the park. The park board is still waiting on bids to come in for the stump removal, and Byer said once they’ve received all the bids and chosen the best contractor for the job, the first 25 stumps will be removed by the contractor. The remaining stumps will then be handled by the street department as quickly as time allows.

Knox’s No-Burn Ordinance Still In Effect

A no-burn ordinance remains in effect in the city of Knox.

Mayor Rick Chambers is urging residents to follow this ordinance and not burn leaves or other brush and debris within the city limits.

If you need to be rid of leaves in your yard, the street department will be picking up leaves each day beginning tomorrow. You can rake the leaves to the street along the side for pick up. Do not pile the leaves in the alley. Do not bag the leaves, and remove all trash and other debris from the pile.

You are also welcome to take grass clippings or leaves to the compost drop-off behind City Hall.

House Republicans Release Agenda, “Own Your American Dream”

Speaker of the Indiana House of Representatives Brian C. Bosma, alongside a dozen of his House Republican colleagues, announced that House Republican Agenda this week. The agenda focuses on making Indiana stronger state for future generations on three key concepts: financial security for future generations, bridging the skills gap, and providing support to classroom teachers.

Bosma said every parent hopes for their children to be better off than their own generation, but for the first time in history, the majority of Americans believe that the next generation will not enjoy a quality of life better than their parents.

State Releases September Revenue Report

The State Budget Agency released the monthly revenue report for September 2012 tax collections, with revenues totaling $1.424 billion. This is $23 million above target and $90 million above collections for the same period last year.

Through the month, state general fund revenues increased 5.2 percent–more than double the rate needed to meet the most recent forecast. Total general fund revenues are now $51 million ahead of forecast through the first quarter of the fiscal year.

LaPorte Teen Arrested after Escaping from the LaPorte County Juvenile Detention Center

A LaPorte teenager was arrested yesterday after escaping from the LaPorte County Juvenile Detention Center.

The teen escaped from the center and stole a truck in the Westville area with plans to pick up an ex-girlfriend at South Central High School. Police later located the vehicle near the school and attempted a traffic stop, but the driver fled.
