Firefighters from the North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department were called to Cravin’s in North Judson Thursday night.
According to Fire Chief Joe Leszek, old tires inside the building were on fire. Crews were on the scene for about two hours. No injuries were reported. No other fire departments were called to assist.
The Starke County Park Board is thinking about putting together a work group to help set goals for the future of the Bass Lake Beach and Campground. But how much good that would do was a topic of debate during Tuesday’s park board meeting.
Culver Town Manager Jonathan Leist presented the town council this week with a deed of dedication for the streets for the Sandhill Farm workforce development housing project.
The proposed housing project will be constructed on W. Jefferson Street. The streets in the project may be extended as needed. The housing development will include 24 apartment units. It is part of the town’s Stellar Communities Designation Program application.

During the hearing, Clerk-Treasurer Jeff Houston went over specific items on the notice to the taxpayer. He explained that the max civil levy is the maximum amount of money that is allowed to be collected from property taxes. The estimated max civil levy is $1,567,438. He also described that the tax cap, the amount of money not allowed to be collected based on the classification of particular properties, is $221,292. The estimated general fund is $1,563,107. The Town of Hamlet stands to make over $40,000 by selling an old fire truck. The Fenton, Louisiana Fire Department has actually agreed to buy the truck for $45,000, while Hamlet will cover the $4,500 listing fee. Continue reading
Members of the Winamac Town Council received a couple of updates about renovations to the new police station during their meeting Monday evening. Town Marshall Mike Buchanan said that a new building on Main Street was purchased back in January and renovations started around March. He predicts they’re approximately 4-6 weeks away from occupying the new space.
During the Town Manager report at the meeting, Brad Zellers told members all that’s left to do is ceiling, door and flooring installation, as well as work that needs done in the parking lot. Continue reading
The Knox City Council held the first reading of the 2018 salary ordinance during their meeting Tuesday evening. A three percent increase is being proposed across the board, with the exception of part-time police, which had a specific raise amount recommend by the Chief of Police.
Mayor Dennis Estok explained the three percent increase is being proposed across the board because of a recent insurance policy change. Continue reading
A beefed-up drug testing policy and a few other updates to Pulaski County’s employee handbook will soon be able to take effect. The updated policies were approved by the county council Monday, following the county commissioners’ approval last week.
The Hamlet Police Department is getting a new utility vehicle, but it’s not expected to hit the road until 2018.
The Culver Town Council approved the formation of the Culver Economic Development Commission.
A public hearing on the matter was held Tuesday night where a question about the purpose of the commission was raised. Town Council President Ginny Bess Munroe explained that the commission would be able to deem a residential project eligible for tax abatement. She further explained that a residential tax abatement differs from a commercial tax abatement, but the financial incentive is the same. A recommendation for a residential tax abatement has to be presented by the commission to the town council for approval.
In the Winamac Town Council meeting earlier this week, Town Manager Brad Zellers asked the council to consider changing the golf cart registration policy. The current policy requires individuals to register every two years. Zellers proposed bringing that down to one year. Continue reading
A group of eighth graders at Winamac Middle School is designing a high-tech locker, to make it easier to stay organized and get to class. The Eastern Pulaski School Board got an update Monday from the school’s new Nanoline team. It will be competing against other middle and high school students to come up with ways to make life easier using automation.
The Town of Culver will be honoring the memory of victims of the World Trade Center attacks, fallen heroes and their families with a 9/11 Heroes 5K Run and 1 mile fun run/walk on Saturday, September 16. In the meanwhile, event coordinators and volunteers have been lining the course with American flags.
Walkers and runners of all different ages and abilities are asked to come out to the Culver Academy Naval Building this Saturday to show support for veterans, their families and first responders. An armed robbery suspect is in custody after an Wednesday morning incident at a LaCrosse business.
According to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Department, a black male entered the BP gas station in LaCrosse at 11:15 a.m. CT and demanded that the cashier open the register. Police say the suspect told the cashier that he had a weapon in his possession, but it was not displayed. The suspect fled the area south on Washington Street.
Pulaski County communities are facing budget deficits, due to a shortfall in local income tax revenues. The issue was brought to the attention of the county council Monday, after Winamac Clerk-Treasurer Melanie Berger noticed a decline in the town’s share of Local Levy Freeze Income Tax funds.
The Culver Town Council members are in support of a petition against INDOT’s proposed J-turn intersection at U.S. 31 and State Road 10 and Dewey Street and another at U.S. 31 and State Road 110.
The J-turn intersection would not allow a vehicle to turn left at a crossroad. Instead, the driver has to travel quite a distance in order to turn left, or the opposite direction to go back past the crossroad to turn left again to the desired location. INDOT feels that the construction would create a safer way for traffic to maneuver.
During the Knox City Council meeting last night, members considered a change to the Fire Protection Agreement between the City and the Knox-Center Township Volunteer Fire Department.
As things were, volunteer firefighters would receive $10 per call, regardless of the time spent at a location. Mayor Dennis Estok said that whether they’re there for five minutes or five hours and they would still only receive $10. After attending a meeting recently Mayor Estok saw a need for an adjustment.
