History Boat Cruise Sails Wednesday
Learn more about legendary Hoosier author Kurt Vonnegut Jr.’s connections to Lake Maxinkuckee in Culver during a special history boat cruise and view more at Merritt Supply of the materials they used in this boat.
Local historian Jeff Kenney will lead the cruise which will dock at the cottage of Clemens Vonnegut, Jr. which was recently restored to its late 1800s architecture. The effort won recognition and awards statewide. Attendees of the boat cruise will learn about the extensive history of the Vonnegut family who occupied a number of cottages on Lake Maxinkuckee’s east shore in the later 1800s.

Plea and Sentencing Hearing Set for Jason Cooke
A plea and sentencing hearing has been set in Starke Circuit Court in the case of Jason Cooke. Cooke, of Plymouth, is accused of hitting Sescoe Wireman and stealing several items from him in an incident at a home in the 100 block of East 500 South in Knox on Oct. 7, 2015. Court documents state that multiple strikes to Wireman’s head led to his death.
Starke County Sheriff Looking for Pay Increases in Next Year’s Budget
Starke County Sheriff Bill Dulin commented to the Starke County Council in mid-July that he would like to see a pay increase for the staff at the Starke County Sheriff’s Office.
Sheriff Dulin said that his department is the lowest paid in the county. His staff has a lower wage than those working for the Starke County EMS, Starke County Highway Department and even the town and city police departments within the county. Officers are leaving the department to seek the same employment in other jurisdictions because of pay.

Information Sought in Pulaski County Burglary Investigation
The Pulaski County Sheriff’s Office is asking for the public’s help in locating items stolen from a home near State Road 39 and County Road 550 South. Detectives say the burglary occurred sometime between 9:00 p.m. Wednesday and 8:00 a.m. Thursday. They believe several large items were stolen, including appliances, lawn care equipment, and personal effects.
Status Hearing Set in the Case of Jason Cooke
The Plymouth man allegedly involved in the robbery and beating of a Knox man in October of 2015 will appear in Starke Circuit Court this afternoon for a status hearing.

Bud Krohn Jr. Resigns from Pulaski County Board of Commissioners
Pulaski County Commissioner Bud Krohn Jr. has resigned. In a letter filed Wednesday with the Pulaski County Clerk’s Office, Krohn said that due to health issues, he feels he is “unable to give the full effort required to effectively serve as Commissioner.” Continue reading

A major Northwest Indiana company is celebrating 70 years in business. Chester Incorporated was established in 1947, when Orville Redenbacher and Charles Bowman purchased the George F. Chester & Sons Seed Company, according to company officials.
Work Continues on Knox Habitat for Humanity Project, Volunteers Sought
Starke/Pulaski Habitat for Humanity is making progress on its Knox home building project. Volunteers are helping to build a house at the corner of Prettyman and Delaware streets for Hope McIntire and her 5-year-old daughter Raelynn.
Stellar Video Production Set for Aug. 19
Culver residents have a chance to be a part of the Town of Culver’s quest to be a Stellar Community by participating in a Stellar Video production. This is the second consecutive year Culver has been selected as a finalist in the Stellar Communities Designation Program.

Winamac Park Board to Discuss Veterans Memorial Park, Pool Grant
The Winamac Park Board will consider upgrades to Veterans Memorial Park tonight. Board members have been discussing the addition of a decorative archway, and the VFW and American Legion have each offered to donate a bench. On top of that, the American Legion has offered to place its cannon in the park, should it decide to sell its current building.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, getting an annual flu vaccine is the first and best way to protect against influenza. The flu vaccine is said to reduce doctor’s visits and missed work and school. Those who are more vulnerable to serious flu complications, including the elderly, infants, pregnant women and those who suffer from certain health conditions, should get a flu shot early.
