Culver Police Chief Hiring Officers
Culver Police Chief Wayne Bean is looking to hire officers for the department.
He told the Culver Town Council during their last meeting that one officer resigned the previous day and he will replace that officer. He is already reviewing applications for another vacancy in the department. As he reviews the applications, Chief Bean said he may go ahead and hire two in this round. He may choose to re-advertise for officers to gather more applications.
Local Organization Launches Shoe Drive to Fund Women’s Education Opportunities
The local chapter of an international organization wants your old shoes. Philanthropic Educational Organization, P.E.O. for short, has teamed up with an organization called Funds2Orgs.com for a shoe drive. The nonprofit international women’s sisterhood raises money to help women meet their educational goals and dreams. Local member Jacalyn Ciboch says the local chapter is very active. Continue reading
Knox School Board Agenda Includes Plans for Next Year
The Knox Community School Board members will have a full agenda when they meet in regular session tonight.
The board will approve the registration dates and times as well at the student and faculty handbooks for the upcoming school year. The board will also consider renewing a contract with The Crossing alternative school and they will be given an update on eLearning.
Free Meals at Six Locations for Culver-Area Students
The Summer Food Service Program will assist Culver and area students at six different sites this summer.
Culver Community School Food Services Director Carin Clifton says children ages 18 and younger and people with disabilities who are still enrolled in K-12 educational programming are welcome to eat free meals this summer. She encourages students to take part in this opportunity to receive a nutritional meal. All meals must be eaten on site.

Knox-Center Township Firefighters Battle Apartment Fire
Firefighters responded to an apartment fire at 1515 S. Heaton Street in Knox Sunday evening.
Knox-Center Township Fire Chief Kenny Pfost said they were called to the scene at 5:05 p.m. and remained at the scene for 2.5 hours. The fire was contained to a single apartment, but an adjacent unit suffered water damage.
Two Injured after Train Strikes Car
A mother and son were injured after their car was struck by a train Saturday night at the CSX railroad crossing at Range Road and 700 S. in La Porte County.
The accident occurred at 7:50 p.m. CT. According to an investigation by deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office, the 36-year-old driver from Kingsford Heights was traveling south on Range Road waiting for a westbound train to pass. Once the train passed, she drove her car around the gates unaware an eastbound train was approaching. The train struck the rear of the passenger car and it was pushed 150 feet from the crossing into a cornfield.
Man Injured in Single Vehicle Accident
A man was injured after reportedly driving into a barricade in La Porte County Sunday morning.
Deputies from the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office say the man hit the barricade on County Road 950 W. north of County Road 300 N. where the road dead ends into Interstate 94. The male driver was found lying on the ground outside of his vehicle. He was unresponsive with serious head injuries.
Bicyclist Critically Hurt after Hit and Run
La Porte County Sheriff’s deputies are looking for the suspect in a bicycle hit-and-run accident early Saturday morning.
Police received a call about the crash just before 7:30 a.m. CT saying that a person driving a “green truck” was seen leaving the scene after hitting Gregory L. Thompson, 56, of New Carlisle, traveling east on State Road 2 in La Porte County.

Winamac Park Board Submits Pool Grant Application
Winamac officials are optimistic that the town will be able to get a $200,000 grant to rebuild its swimming pool. Free Meals to be Offered at Knox High School as Part of Summer Food Service Program
Knox-area children age 18 and under will once again be able to get free meals this month as part of the USDA Summer Food Service Program.
Safe Routes to School Construction in Culver Underway
The second round of the Safe Routes to School project in Culver is just getting started.
Sidewalks will be installed on the south side of Academy Street from School Street to Lake Shore and on College Avenue.
Phend and Brown was contracted to complete the work at a cost of $330,000. The Town of Culver secured grant money for this project.
“Boss Baby” to Be Shown Tonight in North Judson, As Part of Movies in the Park Series
Another free movie in the park event will be held tonight in North Judson. “Boss Baby” will be shown at 8:00 p.m. at Norwayne Field.
Earthworks Summer Curriculum Released
This summer’s curriculum for the Earthworks organization at The Center at Donaldson is based on the DNR’s “Project Wild” program. This curriculum provides a wide range of environmental activities for children.
According to Adam Thada, Ecological Relationships Director at The Center at Donaldson, trail cameras will be installed to study the lives of the wildlife on campus. Children participating in the program will learn about the animals seen on campus and their habitat.
