Winamac Park Board Updates Residents on Pool Grant Application

The Winamac Park Board is moving ahead with a grant application for the town’s swimming pool rebuilding project. The town’s applying for up to $200,000 in matching money from the federal Land and Water Conservation Fund through the Indiana Department of Natural Resources. Before turning in the grant application, the park board held a public hearing Monday to give residents a chance to weigh in on the project. Continue reading →

Knox Resident Successfully Advocates for Native American Studies Curriculum

High school students across Indiana will be able to study Native American culture, thanks to the efforts of a Knox man. Kenny Lone Eagle successfully advocated for its inclusion in a bill to offer the elective study of various ethnic and racial groups. Courses will be offered if at least 15 students in a school corporation sign up. Lone Eagle says it’s a big step. Continue reading →

Investment in Energy Efficiency Earns N.J.-S.P. Schools a NIPSCO Rebate

Lighting updates at North Judson-San Pierre Schools are already paying off for the corporation. The change from fluorescent to LED bulbs and fixtures will save considerable money over the long term. It also earned the corporation an energy efficiency rebate from NIPSCO. Major Accounts Manager Kelley Davies presented school corporation officials a check for $20,800. She says such rebates are an incentive for schools, businesses and individuals to invest in energy efficiency upgrades. Continue reading →

Culver Town Council Approves Resolutions for Workforce Housing Project

The Culver Town Council opened their public meeting last night to members of the community to discuss opinions on the proposed workforce housing development project on Jefferson Street. The building would include 24 apartments with one, two or three bedrooms. A two-bedroom apartment rent pricing example was estimated at $850 a month. If the town wins the Stellar Communities designation, there would be funding available for Phase 2 which includes a second apartment building for income-based housing.

Oregon-Davis Elementary Students Wish Luck to the Seniors

Oregon-Davis elementary students got to participate in a unique activity on Monday afternoon. It was an activity that Elementary School Principal Bill Bennett said was a first-time event at the school.

“It’s our first annual senior walk here at Oregon-Davis Elementary School,” said Bennett. “One of the things that we’re trying to do with the students is to get them excited about school and looking at the end in sight. By our seniors walking the hallway, they’ll kind of get a glimpse of the future and something to look forward to.” Continue reading →

Culver Town Council to Gather Opinions on Housing Project Tonight

The Culver Town Council will hold a public input session tonight to gather opinions on the proposed Sand Hill Farms workforce housing project. Public comment will be taken at 6:30 p.m. prior to the start of tonight’s regular meeting agenda.

Town Manager Jonathan Leist explained that the project has been in the town’s comprehensive plan since the plan’s adoption in 2014. The lack of housing was identified as one of the main issues in the plan. Leist said a committee was formed to look into the project. It is part of this year’s Stellar Communities grant application. Culver town officials should know Wednesday, May 24 if Culver is a finalist in the application process.

Chickens Complaints Lead to Lengthy Discussion During North Judson Town Council Meeting

The North Judson Town Council may revisit its animal ordinance, following complaints about chickens during last week’s meeting. Nearly six years ago, council members voted to prohibit residents from keeping farm animals, including chickens, within town limits.
