Rural LaPorte County Man Dies, Following Crash North of LaPorte

A rural LaPorte County man is dead, after reportedly crashing a vehicle into a tree early Monday morning. Officers with the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office believe 34-year-old Bryan Meyer was driving a 2002 Ford Explorer southbound on Fail Road about a mile north of LaPorte around 3:00 a.m., when it left the east side of the roadway and struck a tree. Proposed Starke County Truck Route Ordinance Set for Second Reading Tonight

The Starke County Commissioners will consider a proposed truck route ordinance on second reading when they meet this evening.

Starke County Highway Superintendent Rik Ritzler has been working with a committee comprised of county officials, farmers, Sheriff Bill Dulin and Starke County Economic Development Foundation Executive Director Charlie Weaver on the policy.

The eventual goal is to have several local hot-mix asphalt roads to accommodate heavy truck traffic in addition to the highways that crisscross Starke County. Ritzler says eventually all locations in the county will be within a mile of such a road. Continue reading

North Judson Council Addresses Potential Cell Tower Law

 

The North Judson Town Council on Saturday hurriedly passed a resolution to prohibit small cell phone towers from cropping up within their rights of way. It establishes an underground and buried utility district to restrict the addition of any sort of new pole insidethe town limits without council permission. A petition must be brought before the town council, and a public hearing is required. Continue reading

North Judson Town Marshal Appeals Termination

North Judson’s recently terminated town marshal has filed a formal appeal of his firing. The town council fired John Ramos during a special-called meeting on Friday, April 21. He had until 5 p.m. the following Friday to appeal. Town council members did not publicly announce a reason for Raoms’ dismissal. Continue reading

Culver School Board to Approve Superintendent’s Contract

The Culver Community School Board members are expected to approve the new superintendent’s contract when they meet tonight.

The board held a public hearing on the proposed superintendent’s contact on April 17 where no comments were heard. The annual salary of $105,000 was proposed along with insurance and benefits. The contract is valid from July 1, 2017 to June 30, 2020.

Culver Residents Urged to Donate Plastic Caps for Town Project

Supporters of the Culver Visitor’s Center plus students of the Culver Community School Corporation and the local daycare facilities are collecting plastic caps in order to construct plastic benches to be placed along a proposed bike trail around Lake Maxinkuckee. The benches will also be installed in the Culver Town Park.

Any recyclable bottle cap will be accepted. Bottle caps off of two-liter bottles, plastic pop bottles, milk jugs, medicine bottles, detergent containers, and hairspray bottles will be accepted. Flip-top caps, spray paint caps, plain prescription bottles and plastic lids smaller than eight inches may also be donated.

Communities Scrambling to Maintain Restrictions on Small Cell Towers

Indiana communities are worried cell towers could start popping up without their permission, under a measure recently passed by the state legislature, unless they take action by this Sunday. Now, municipalities around the state are scrambling to meet the deadline. The North Judson Town Council will meet in special session this morning at 7:30, while the Culver Town Council met yesterday afternoon. Continue reading

Culver Town Council Approves Park Maintenance Quote

Culver Park Superintendent Anna Campbell presented a quote for maintenance at the Culver Town Park.

Campbell said Sellers Maintenance will grind down areas where tree roots are causing a tripping hazard and fill divots in the grass. The workers will also fertilize the grass and apply seed in areas. Campbell said the west end of the park will be rehabilitated as it is a heavily used area and work was lacking last year.

A new law will allow investment advisors to alert authorities of potential financial exploitation of senior citizens.

Beginning July 1, investment advisors and anyone looking to figure out how to invest 1000 dollars will have the immunity to report suspicions to law enforcement. Previously they were bound by confidentiality and reporting this potential crime would opened the door for a lawsuit or legal action.

Drug Take Back Event is Today

The 13th annual prescription drug take back initiative will take place at all Indiana State Police Posts today. The only location not accepting unwanted, unused, or expired prescription drugs is at the Toll Road Post.

A partnership between the Indiana State Police and the Drug Enforcement Administration is making this possible. The event expects to prevent prescription drug abuse and theft through the proper disposal of prescription drugs.

Judge Lowers Bond for Augusta Hadden, Imposes Conditions on Potential Release

The woman charged in connection with last month’s murder of a Knox man may soon be out of jail on bond, but she will still be subject to strict restrictions. Augusta Hadden, 39, is charged with the level 5 felony offense of assisting a criminal. Court documents indicate she threw a cell phone out of a truck driven by murder suspect Edward Blackburn after he fatally shot Cord Colgrove at a rural North Judson residence on March 3rd.
