It rained and delayed the race. The rain stopped and 124 laps were run before it rained again. It stopped and the race was able to go the distance, but with three laps to go, a caution was called and then a downpour erupted and the race was called. As if the rain didn’t cause enough drama, NASCAR’s Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton stated in a press conference following the race that someone in flag stand leaned on the caution light switch and six seconds after the lights came one, the flagman saw that the lights were on and waved the caution flag with three laps to go. It was when the lights came on, Pemberton said, when they froze the field and that made up the finishing order. Just as the yellow flag came out, the sky opened up and started to pour on the racetrack.
The Yellow River at Knox remains steady at 7.54 feet and forecasters do not predict it will rise to the flood level.
Officers will be targeting aggressive and impaired drivers. Additional officers will be out in saturation patrols attempting to take impaired drivers off the streets.

The Community Services of Starke County food pantry is in need of several food and non-food items.
Officials say that peanut butter is needed along with macaroni and cheese. Any other food donation would also be accepted, but those are things that are needed the most.

The Marshall County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the theft of electronics reported stolen from a conference room at the Poor Handmaids Ministry Center Wednesday afternoon. The theft occurred during the conference lunch break, sometime between noon and 12:45 p.m. EDT, according to the police report. A first generation iPad, a wallet and a Nikon camera lens were taken. Officials say about 45 people were attending the conference. Anyone with information is asked to contact the Marshall County Sheriff’s Department at 574-936-3187.
The combination of warmer temperatures and solidly frozen ground is increasing the likelihood of flooding this weekend, especially in a few flood-prone areas. The National Weather Service has extended the flood warning for the Kankakee River at Davis Route 30 until late Monday night. Last night at 8 the river was at 9.4 feet and steady there. Minor flooding is forecast, as flood stage is 10 feet. The Kankakee River is expected to rise to near flood stage around 7 p.m. Sunday. At 10 feet flooding of low-lying agricultural areas begins. Flooding is also possible for the Tippecanoe River near Ora. It’s expected to crest around 12.2 feet later this afternoon and fall below flood stage Sunday night. At 12 feet significant rural and lowland flooding begins, according to the National Weather Service.
Ronald E. Robinson, 56, was stopped along U.S. 35 north of Johnson Road and when the LaPorte County Sheriff’s Department K9 conducted a free air sniff of the vehicle, the dog alerted to the presence of narcotics.
Winamac Town Manager Jim Conner said the maintenance cost to keep the existing pool up and running is too costly. The town is pursuing options to get the pool up and running in 2015.
The Knox City Council approved an ordinance revising fees for the Planning Commission this week on its second reading, leaving just one more reading to be approved for the ordinance to take effect. Mayor Rick Chambers told the city council that he recently met with Charles Weaver, executive director of the Starke County Economic Development Foundation, to discuss the proposed maximum commercial permit fee of up to $7500.
