Salvation Army Bell Ringers Needed!
Salvation Army Bell Ringers are still needed in Starke County! Starke County Bell Ringer coordinator Joe Lopez stressed the fact that funds collected at the local collection centers remain in the area.
Lopez explained, “The money does not go out of the county, all the money collected is spent here in Starke County and it helps a lot of people that need help during the holiday so we really appreciate any help we can get.”
The two Starke County Bell Ringer locations are Bailey’s Discount Center in North Judson and Five Star in Knox. Lopez mentioned that there is a special perk to working these spots.
“I know that a lot of people watch the Salvation Army Bell Ringers out in the cold,” he said, “we’re fortunate to have Bailey’s indoors and Five Star also indoors so you’re not standing out in the weather freezing.” Continue reading
Bailey’s is Featuring the Indiana Heart Gallery for National Adoption Awareness Month
Nearly 400,000 children are currently in foster care nationally. More than 100,000 of those kids are legally available for adoption. November is National Adoption Awareness month and one local business is doing their part to help connect children in need to individuals who may be looking to make an addition to their family.
From now until November 10th, Bailey’s Discount Center will feature a photo exhibit from the Indiana Heart Gallery. The Indiana Heart Gallery is an organization that travels around the state with compelling portraits and stories of children in need of adoptive families. In 2007, the program was started by the Indiana Department of Child Services in order to put actual faces on a need that sometimes seems invisible. Continue reading
Starke Hospital Mobile Health Units Providing Breast Cancer Awareness Info in October
Starke Hospital will have mobile health units out in a few places in the Starke County community during the month of October. Starke Hospital’s Regional Manager of Community Relations Stacey Kellogg said that wellness professionals will be onsite to help disburse breast cancer awareness information. Kellogg said the professionals will be able to steer people in the right direction when it comes to how and when individuals should be screened and other helpful health tips. She said they will have information there about early detection practices, clinical breast exams, how to do a self breast exam, when everybody should get screened and how to have that conversation with your doctor. The Wellness Outreach Professionals with the Mobile Health Unit of the La Porte Hospital will be making stops around the community during national prostate cancer awareness month. La Porte County and Starke County will have Mobile Health Units set up in various places throughout the month of September in order to provide men’s health education and promote the importance of colorectal cancer screenings. Mobile Health Unit to Visit Starke County for Colon Cancer, Sleep Apnea Awareness
Colon cancer prevention will bring LaPorte Hospital’s Mobile Health Unit to local communities this month. March is National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, and LaPorte Hospital officials will be traveling around Starke and LaPorte counties to hand out take-home test kits. Local Store Benefits from Energy Rebate
“America’s Bargain Capital” is quite a bit brighter thanks to an energy efficiency incentive offered by Kankakee Valley REMC. Mark Bailey of Bailey’s Discount Center opted to replace all of the old fluorescent and metal halide fixtures in the warehouse with modern, higher-efficiency fluorescents after talking to REMC officials about the Power Moves incentive program. Wabash Valley Power, the organization that supplies wholesale electricity to Kankakee Valley REMC, pays cash incentives to commercial and industrial facilities that replace older, less-efficient lighting and other equipment with higher-efficiency devices. As an REMC member, Bailey’s was eligible for the program. Kankakee Valley REMC Energy Advisor Darrell Marks recently presented Bailey a rebate check for $7,600.
Starke County Volunteers Keep the Bell Ringing for Salvation Army
Have you noticed the Salvation Bell ringers at Five Star and at Bailey’s Discount on the weekends? Elaine Silvius, Service Representative for the Starke County Salvation Army Chapter, says the campaign seems to be going very well this season. Elaine said Starke County donates well to the bell ringers.
“The people of Starke County are real givers when it comes to the buckets,” said Elaine Silvius. “They always put something in.”
