Declining enrollment and state funding continue to cause concerns for the Culver Community Schools Corporation. In an update to the school board last week, Corporation Treasurer Casey Howard said that enrollment was about 1,073 students during the 2009-2010 school year. She said it’s now just under 739 students.
Culver School Board Approves Recreation Easement Agreement for Cavalier Sports Park
The development of Culver’s Cavalier Sports Park cleared another procedural hurdle Monday. The Culver School Board approved a recreation easement agreement. “That is the park that is being developed out here through the Stellar Designation for the Town of Culver and Union Township,” School Superintendent Karen Shuman explained. “Both of them have put money toward developing that park. They just need our easement agreement to make those improvements.”
Culver School Board Approves Use of Bond Money to Remodel Entrance, Restrooms at Middle/High School
Upgrades to Culver Community Middle/High School will soon be able to move ahead. The school board voted Monday to use bond money to move the main entrance and office to where the school’s library currently is. Board member Mark Maes commented that the new arrangement would be a big upgrade, both for safety and aesthetics. Some of the bond money will also be used to remodel the restrooms across from the high school gym.

The Culver School Board will continue preparing for a possible operational referendum tonight. Agreements with accounting firm Umbaugh and Associates and law firm Ice Miller to help with the referendum process will be up for approval. An operational referendum is designed to help a school corporation supplement its General Fund, which pays for things like teacher salaries.

Culver Students Help Build Houses for Families in Mexico
A group of Culver students recently went to Mexico to help improve the living conditions of local families. The Culver School Board heard a presentation Monday from Culver Community High School students Cody Rieckhoff and RT Roberts. They, along with Marcella Cooper, joined a group of about 40 students from Culver Academies on a spring break mission trip.
