Knox students who’ve fallen behind in their lunch payments have had their debt wiped away, thanks to the generosity of the local community. Corporation Treasurer Dawn Bailey told the Knox School Board last week that an anonymous donor gave $800 to cover any negative lunch account balances.
Culver Schools to Do Away with Alternative Lunch for Students with Negative Account Balances
Students at Culver Community Schools who have fallen behind in their lunch payments will now continue to get regular hot lunches. Previously, students who had accumulated a negative balance in their lunch accounts beyond a certain amount had been given an alternative box lunch. The issue, according to Superintendent Karen Shuman, is that students were still being charged, even though they weren’t getting a regular lunch.
Goal Reached for Purchase of Tasers
The goal to purchase tasers for the Knox City Police Department is complete. The 14-year-old tasers the officers are currently using can be retired to make way for updated equipment.
Knox City Police Chief Harold Smith thanks all who contributed toward the effort. He said tasers are an important tool for law enforcement as they are a non-lethal way to bring potentially violent confrontations to a relatively safe conclusion without the use of deadly force.
Knox Police Department Taser Fundraiser Less Than $400 Away from Goal
The Knox Police Department has been seeking funds for taser replacement. At the Knox City Council meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Dennis Estok announced that the goal of $6,000 has nearly been reached.
Police Chief Harold Smith has said in the past that the tasers that are currently available to the department are more than 14 years old and in a state beyond repair. Due to budget restrictions, the Knox PD asked for community assistance to replace the tasers. They had a crowd-funding account where people could donate online and they also received check and cash donations. Continue reading
Donations Still Needed for Taser Purchase
Knox Police Chief Harold Smith updated the Knox Board of Public Works last week on a fundraiser to aid in the purchases of tasers for the officers.
According to the GoFundMe page created for this crowdfunding effort, $1,700 has been raised toward the $6,000 goal. Chief Smith told the board of works members that a personal injury law firm in South Bend has offered to match donations to a certain denomination and has done so thus far.

The Knox Police Department is approaching the halfway point in terms of fundraising for the purchase of a K9. Police Chief Harold Smith told the board of works on Wednesday they’ve raised $7,300 of the $17,000 to cover the cost of buying and training the dog and its handler. Monday, Aug. 3 marked WKVI morning show host Tom Berg’s five year anniversary at the Voice of the Valley. He celebrated it in a Chicago hospital. Oncologists at Cancer Treatment Center of America confirmed his diagnosis of cancer in his colon, liver, lungs, lymph nodes, lining of his abdomen and possibly his stomach.
