Hamlet Town Board Outlines Budget Schedule
A public hearing is scheduled September 23rd. on the 2016 budget for the Town of Hamlet. Action to adopt the budget is expected to be taken October 21st.
The Town Attorney, Martin Bedrock, discussed with the board action that can be taken to remove abandoned, fire damaged and unsafe structures. Notices have been mailed to the owners of several such properties, who have 10 days to request a hearing on the matter. Continue reading
Starke County Election Board Finalizes Ballots
The ballots are set for the Nov. 3 General Elections in Starke County. Voters in the towns of North Judson and Hamlet will elect clerk-treasurers. In North Judson, Republican incumbent Donna Henry has drawn a challenge from Democrat Alicia (Amidei) Collins. North Judson voters will also choose between incumbent Republican Wendy Hoppe and Democrat Joan Haugh for the Ward 2 town council seat. Democrat Ward 1 incumbent Jane Ellen Felchuk and Republican Ward 3 candidate Nathan Bradley are both unopposed. Continue reading
Starke County Election Board to Finalize Ballots Today
Starke County Election Board members will finalize ballots for the November General Election when they meet today. Knox, North Judson and Hamlet will all have municipal elections on Tuesday, Nov. 3. Also voters who reside in Jackson, Wayne, California, and Railroad Townships will weigh in on the proposed North Judson-San Pierre Schools general fund referendum. Starke County Officials Name Redevelopment Commission
Starke County once again has a populated county redevelopment commission board. The volunteer body was established by the commissioners in 2006 and set up a tax increment financing, or TIF, district near the intersection of U.S. 30 and U.S. 35 in Hamlet. It allows property tax money generated in a specific area to be recaptured for infrastructure improvements in the area. By doing so, the land becomes more attractive to other potential business and industrial tenants. The five parcels of land in the Sysco TIF district have generated $15,427.71 for the county. That money is receipted by the auditor and parked in a special account. Continue reading

WKVI Spearheads Community Clean-Up
WKVI is teaming up with former Knox Mayor Nancy Dembowski to clean up the community. Appropriately we are starting with the first thing everybody sees when the roll into town, the Train Depot visitor center across from Wythogan Park.
This week on Wednesday, join us at the depot from 4 until 6 pm equipped with your gloves, rakes, shovels and any other items that will assist with the clean up. Hamlet Officials Prepare for Town Convention
Davis Township Trustee Robin Latimer appeared at the Wednesday night meeting of the Hamlet Town Board to discuss several issues including a reminder that the town’s Democrat convention will be held Tuesday, Aug. 18th in the new fire station. The convention begins at 6 p.m. Voters will choose between incumbent Ward 3 councilman Frank Lonigro Jr. and challenger Connie Bailey. No Republican has qualified for the seat, so the winner will appear on the November ballot. Continue reading
Rainbow Splash to Benefit The Starke County Youth Club
Take a colorful walk through history for a good cause Sunday morning during the Yellowstone Trail Festival in Hamlet. Proceeds from the Rainbow Splash 2015 will benefit the Starke County Youth Club. Yellowstone Trail Fest Starts Saturday at the Hamlet 4-H Fairgrounds
Yellowstone Trail Fest begins tomorrow and will run from 9 am until 10 pm on Saturday and from 8 am until 5 pm on Sunday. The festival kicks off with a 9 am biscuits and gravy breakfast. All proceeds collected from the breakfast will go to the Knox Band Boosters. Continue reading
Library Board Approves Facilities Upgrades
Major repairs will be made to the parking lot of the Schricker Main Library in Knox sometime in the next two weeks, weather permitting. Library officials advise every effort will be made to minimize inconvenience to patrons while the work is being done and stay open as much as possible. A bulldozer, two dump trucks and other equipment will be parked at the library during the project. It’s been in the planning stages for several months but was delayed due to rain.
Library director Rose Frost says fines will be forgiven during the repair process in case people can’t park to return materials. Continue reading
Starke United Fund Launches Capital Campaign
The Starke United Fund supports initiatives that promote financial stability and independence, programs that help children and youth succeed and projects that strengthen and support families and improve the health of our community. Each year, members with the Starke United Fund work to create long-lasting change by addressing the underlying issues in our community and empowering citizens.
Starke United works in collaboration with various other agencies and members of the community. Last year thanks to generous donations, nearly $30,000 was granted to many of Starke County’s non-profit organizations. Starke United works very hard to assist as many people as possible, but they can’t do it alone. As the 2015 Starke United Fund Campaign kicks off, you are asked to join in and lend a hand. Symbolic Flag Raised at New Hamlet Fire Station
The flag raised at the grand spening of the James R. Hardesty Hamlet Davis Township Volunteer Fire Station & Community Center Sunday once flew in Iraq.Dave Aquino, a volunteer fireman, says it’s the flag his son’s unit would hoist above towers they were building in Iraq. He presented the flag to his father when he returned home.

The crowd of area residents that gathered for the Grand Opening of the “James R. Hardesty Hamlet Davis Township Volunteer Fire Station and Community Center” Sunday afternoon at the new building was both pleased and proud.
