The 4-H fair is scheduled to start soon and the Starke County Career Success Coalition is looking for volunteers willing to help run their booth in the commercial building from 7:30 to 10 pm during fair week, July 13th through the 17th. The objective of the coalition is to provide easier access to higher education to local adults and recent graduates. EMA Director Worries About Effect of Rain on Crops
The continued rains have left many area farmers up a creek, so to speak. Starke County Emergency Management Agency Director Ted Bombagetti told the county commissioners last night many have sustained significant losses as a result of standing water. He adds it will be too late for them to replant by the time their fields dry out. Bombagetti has made a formal request for “saturated soil” assistance to the Indiana Department of Homeland Security and is waiting for a response. Continue reading

The hazardous waste collection event is located at 3835 East 250 North in Knox and runs Friday, June 12 from 3:30 until 5 pm and Saturday, June 13 from 8:30 am until 1 pm. Traffic Stop Leads to Drug Arrest
A passenger in a vehicle that was stopped because it did not have a windshield ended up taking a ride in a police car. Starke County Sheriff’s Office Chief Detective Rob Olejniczak pulled over a vehicle driven by 34-year-old Shannon Watts of North Judson on 500 North at 750 East in Hamlet on Wednesday, May 26, according to a news release. Hamlet Park Board Prepares for Summer
The Hamlet Park is being prepared for the summer season. When the Park Board met recently, members took action to replace the old water fountain and to provide a proper drain for the excess water. A number of new trees may be planted after the Board reviews prices. Park security will be updated with new and improved cameras, and consideration will be given to providing a cold drink machine in the shelter. The Board also approved a $1000 donation to support this summer’s Yellowstone Trail Fest.
