Most Roads Open, INDOT Still Urges Caution

Most roads across Northwest Indiana are now passable. However, it’s still too cold for road salt to be effective, so a sheet of ice should be expected on all roads across northwest Indiana. Conditions may get worse overnight when any thawing and melting that has occurred during the day may refreeze. Deichley adds icy conditions likely won’t improve until later in the day tomorrow when temperatures are expected to become more favorable for chemical melting agents and plows to achieve optimal results. Until then, INDOT is asking the public to refrain from any non-emergency travel. Those who must travel are asked to be prepared for these conditions before leaving and to adjust driving behaviors in order to arrive at destinations safely. Take it slow, leave plenty of room between vehicles and give plows ample space to work.

Cold and Wind Hamper INDOT’s Efforts to Clear Roads

INDOT snow plow drivers are fighting a losing battle with Mother Nature as they try to clear snow from the roads. They advise blowing and drifting snow has intensified and icy conditions persist on nearly all roadways. All roads should be considered extremely slick and hazardous, and motorists are discouraged from driving in non-emergency situations.

The sub-zero temperatures are wreaking havoc on plow trucks and other heavy machinery, and this is forcing repairs in the midst of plow routes. Roads are also drifting shut soon after they are cleared by plows, and abandoned vehicles on some roadways are making it impossible to clear them. Additionally, road salt is less effective in these frigid temperatures, making it very difficult to remove hard-pack snow and ice without a spike in temperatures. INDOT officials stress that motorist safety is their primary concern when they ask people to stay off the roads. If you insist on being out, take it slow and carry a charged cell phone and emergency kit in your car. Remember, these road conditions are slowing response times for police, firefighters, EMTS and tow trucks. Frostbite and hypothermia can develop very quickly on exposed skin, and you may freeze to death before help arrives.

U.S. 35 Bridge Project Nearing Completion

Work on the U.S. 35 bridge is coming to a close.

Indiana Department of Transportation spokesman Matt Deitchley stated that it could be next week before the bridge is open to traffic. The final surface of the roadway, lane striping and median work is left. If the weather cooperates, the opening could occur a little sooner than anticipated.

The weather was the reason why the project was pushed back from its original completion date in November.

Deitchley will notify WKVI when the crews are nearing the time when the bridge will be open. The bridge has been closed since June.

INDOT Announces Road Closure in Starke and Marshall Counties

Motorists traveling between Bass Lake and Culver will need to seek an alternate route for the next couple of days. INDOT plans to close State Road 10 between state roads 23 and 17 in Starke and Marshall Counties Wednesday and Thursday, weather permitting for chip and fog seal repairs. INDOT’s marked detour will use State Road 8 to get around the closure. The work will only occur if it does not rain. The chip and fog sealing process is designed to extend the life of the pavement. INDOT officials say crews are trying to get as much done as possible before school starts so as not to disrupt bus routes.

INDOT Schedules Road Closure For State Road 110

Monday’s rain delayed INDOT’s scheduled chip and fog sealing of State Road 110 east of U.S. 31. The work is now scheduled to start Tuesday and wrap up Wednesday. INDOT’s marked detour will utilize U.S. 31 and State Roads 10 and 331 to get around the closure. Chip and fog seal repairs are performed in order to extend the life of the pavement. INDOT officials are trying to complete as many projects as possible before school resumes in order to minimize disruption of bus routes.

INDOT Makes Another Announcement of Two-Day Road Closure

State Road 10, between U.S. 31 near Argos and State Road 117 near Culver, will be closed beginning today through the end of the day Thursday. Crews will perform a chip seal and fog seal operation. This project is dependent on dry weather and may be delayed if conditions aren’t right.

Westbound travelers on State Road 10 will be detoured south on U.S. 31, west on State Road 110, north on State Road 117, and back to State Road 10. INDOT Announces Temporary SR 23 Road Closure

A highway east of Knox will be closed for the next couple of days for some preventive maintenance. INDOT crews will chip and fog seal State Road 23 between State Roads 8 and 10 today and tomorrow, weather permitting. INDOT’s marked detour will utilize State Road 8, U.S. 35 and State Road 10 to get around the work. The process consists of pouring liquid asphalt on the roadway and covering it with crushed stone to provide a new wearing surface. Chip-sealing extends the life of the roadway by protecting it from moisture, ultra-violet degradation and other possible damage. The fog seal is applied on top of the chip-seal work. It’s a light application of asphalt that helps to lock in loose stone and help with dust problems. It also makes the road black, which in turn makes pavement markings more visible. INDOT warns that loose gravel may be present on recently chip-sealed roads and can damage windshields and paint on vehicles that are following too closely. Motorists are urged to slow down and allow plenty of space between vehicles.
