Continue readingKnox school employees are getting a pay raise. Earlier this month, the school board approved a base salary increase for teachers. Last week, board members did the same for the rest of the staff.
Knox High School’s pit area may be gone, but it continues to be a topic of discussion during school board meetings. Principal Dr. Elizabeth Ratliff told board members last month that the area where the pit used to be has gotten some new furniture. “The nice part is the kids love it,” she said. “So we’re seeing anywhere from 25 to 30 kids sitting in there every day. By being able to spread out the chairs, they’re really enjoying it, taking good care of it. So that’s been a very positive addition, also.”
With the meeting room packed with parents, teachers, and band and athletic fans, the Knox School Board, late yesterday afternoon, assured those patrons it had no intent to “do away” with any particular extracurricular activity in its 2016 budget cutting efforts.
Social media had been reporting all day that budget support of certain programs was scheduled to be drastically reduced or completely removed from the schedule of activities at the scheduled work session.

Superintendent A.J. Gappa said he’s served many years on the board but has never served as the head of the board.
“The president will be Mr. Kirk Bennett,” announced Gappa. “The new vice president is Gary Dulin and the new secretary will be Mary Lynn Ritchie. This will be Kirk’s first go-around as president. It’s going to be a challenging year and he wanted to challenge everybody to live up to it and accept the challenge. As we move forward, we’ll try and do whatever is best for the school corporation.”
The Knox Community School Board approved two agenda items that involve the Qualified School Construction Bond project at the high school. The project includes rehabilitating the roof, lighting, ceiling and HVAC unit in the pool area and water piping throughout the building.
