The Starke County Traffic Safety Partnership will be conducting a Safe Family Travel patrol beginning this Friday and it will continue through November 27th.
This blitz is a grant from the Indiana Criminal Justice Institute and will focus on impaired drivers and seat belt enforcement. This grant will allow additional officers to enforce these laws and they will not be giving out warnings. They will be issuing tickets to those who are in violation of these laws.
Four people were arrested in Knox on Friday after police responded to a call of possible drug activity.
Knox City Police Department officers were called to Smith Farm Store’s parking lot where police questioned four people reportedly involved in the incident. After a search into shopping bags and the vehicle, they were found to be in possession of fuel and decongestant tablets commonly used in the manufacture of methamphetamine.
Knox City Police were called to 208 S. Main Street in reference to a fight on Monday.
According to the police report, three juvenile girls were reportedly fighting and hitting each other. The parents then got involved. Charles McCarty reportedly pulled up to the scene and went after James Baldridge who told police McCarty allegedly pulled out a knife. Kelly McCarty then reportedly hit Misty Baldridge in the face after McCarty exited the vehicle with Charles McCarty. Misty Baldridge reportedly tried to break up the fight between the juvenile girls and that’s when she was allegedly punched in the face.

Starke County emergency personnel were called to a three vehicle accident at the intersection of State Road 8 and U.S. 35 Saturday.
Marilyn Stellingwerf, 83, of Demotte, was at the intersection when she pulled onto U.S. 35 and into the path of a vehicle driven by Vaid Robinson, 74, of Hamlet. Robinson hit the passenger side of Stellingwerf’s vehicle, causing it to spin into the southbound lane of U.S. 35. Robinson’s vehicle was struck by a southbound vehicle driven by Brandon Brammer, 27, of Knox.
A Knox man was arrested Tuesday after he allegedly barged into his ex-girlfriend’s home and threatened to take items from the residence.
Police were called to a home on Ruthie Drive after a woman called to report that her ex-boyfriend, Anthony Rose II, barged into her apartment after he she opened the door to him. The victim told police that he wasn’t supposed to be there and while inside, he told her he was going to take the couch. When she told him he couldn’t have the couch, he threatened to take a video recorder. She told Rose that nothing was leaving the apartment and she called police. After the police were called, Rose allegedly starting hitting himself in the face and told her that he would tell police that she hit him.
Shelby Thomas appeared in Starke Circuit Court on Friday where he plead not guilty to three counts of Attempted Murder, four counts of Intimidation with a Deadly Weapon and three counts of Resisting Law Enforcement with a Deadly Weapon.
Thomas, of North Judson, was arrested on Sunday, October 16th after he allegedly threatened to kill a Knox man in the 1400 block of west 400 S. in Knox as he held a knife up against his throat. The man got away and Thomas was later questioned about the incident. When officers from the Knox City Police Department and the Starke County Sheriff’s Department asked Thomas to place his hands behind his back, his demeanor reportedly turned to anger. He then reached behind his back to remove a knife from his pants line and threatened the lives of two of the officers trying to place him into custody. The blade on the knife was 10 to 12 inches in length and Thomas reportedly began swinging the knife at the three officers and telling them, “I’m not going back to prison. You’ll have to kill me first.” Thomas was then tasered and officers were able to free the knife from Thomas’ hands. Thomas was tasered twice before he released the knife that he reportedly swung at the officers.
The Knox City Police Department continues to investigate the burglary at Five Star.
Police say they are looking for two male suspects who are approximately six feet tall. The vehicle used by the suspects is said to be a gold, late 1990s model Chevy Caprice with dark tinted windows. Detectives say that they have been receiving tips from the security footage that was posted on this website and are following up on the information given to them. Evidence was collected at the scene and is being analyzed by the Indiana State Police Crime Lab.
A search warrant at a residence in Knox resulted in the arrest of three people for drug possession.
The warrant was executed at 404 E. New York Street where police reportedly found drug paraphernalia and marijuana in the residence. Some of the marijuana was found to be individually packaged. The Indiana State Police gathered the evidence to be processed through the Crime Lab.
Officers from the Starke County Sheriff’s Department arrested a Starke County man, Sunday, after he allegedly attempted to stab two men.
Police were called to a residence in the 1400 block of 400 South where they found that Shelby G. Thomas, 56, threatened death to one of the victims by pressing a knife to the victim’s neck. As officers attempted to take Thomas into custody, he then pulled out a large knife and told police that he was not going back to prison. He was eventually taken into custody and transported to the Starke County Jail.
Starke County Sheriffs Department officers were called to a one vehicle roll-over accident on U.S. 35 north of State Road 8 (north) this morning.
The driver of the vehicle, Chantel Box, 25, of Knox, was northbound on U.S. 35 when she lost control of her vehicle causing it to go off the roadway and overturn on the eastside of U.S. 35.
A reward of $1,000 is being offered by the owner of Five Star in Knox for information that would lead to the arrest and conviction of persons who broke into the store early Monday morning. The burglary took place sometime after 1:00 a.m.
The burglars used an acetylene torch to try to cut into an ATM machine, but no money was stolen. The police told WKVI news that the suspects broke into the store by prying open the back door.
A Knox man is recovering after being attacked by a dog at a residence at 2320 East 200 South on Thursday, October 6th.
Marshall Garlach saw his neighbor’s child in his front yard and didn’t know if his neighbor knew he was at his house, according to the police report. Garlach walked the boy home. He opened the gate to enter the property and walked the boy up to the door. It was when Garlach started back toward the gate and the attack began. He said the male dog knocked him to the ground and then the female started to attack him too. Garlach told police that he didn’t know how he did it, but he got away to call 9-1-1.
The investigation into the burglary at Five Star continues and is being handled by the Knox City Police Department where they will be reviewing security cameras that caught three suspects in the store. The burglary occurred shortly after 1:00 a.m. Monday morning.
Police told WKVI that the suspects broke into the store by prying open the back door. The suspects did minimal damage in the store and they attempted to get money from an ATM, but no money was stolen. A complete inventory has not been done to see if anything was taken. Police are are looking for the vehicle used in the incident, a late 1990s model Chevy Malibu.
North Judson-Wayne Township Fire Department Fire Chief, Joe Leszek, reports that the department only had five total fire runs last month. 3 were for medical assistance and 2 were for vehicle accidents. One of those calls came from the town of North Judson, three came from Wayne Township and one came from Rich Grove Township. There were a total of 12,000 gallons of water used in September.
An officer from the Knox City Police Department arrested a Knox man on drug charges and being in possession of Chinese throwing stars.
The officer noticed a vehicle traveling on State Road 8 from 500 East without properly functioning license plate lights. The officers pulled over the vehicle for the equipment violation. When the officer was talking to the occupants of the vehicle, the officer noticed a strong smell of marijuana. The driver, Nolan Wood, reportedly told police that there was a small amount of marijuana in a sandwich bag underneath the passenger seat. The bag was confiscated from the vehicle. The officer also found a case containing two swastika shaped throwing stars. Wood allegedly told police they were his and he was taken into custody.
The Knox City Council heard Mayor Rick Chambers talk about police hand guns last week. The police officers are in line for new guns, and the Mayor talked about the Sig Sauer 40 caliber guns that Chief Clint Norem is recommending.
A Knox man was arrested after he reportedly admitted to stealing an air conditioning unit from Mark’s Body Shop on Saturday, September 24th.
An employee at Mark’s Body Shop reported that the air conditioning unit had been stolen from the business at 253 E. John Street. A witness stated that he saw two male subjects in an older model white Ford Ranger with blue markings on the side pulling out from the west side of the building, according to the police report. He told police that he believes the subjects stole an air conditioner that was located on the west side of the building. The witness said that he observed the large unit in the back of the truck.
Drug and Tobacco Free Starke County recently awarded $18,000 in grants from the Drug Free Starke County Fund. Grants were awarded in three categories: Prevention, Treatment and Justice.
The recipients include North Judson-San Pierre Middle School and High School, City of Knox for National Night Out, TAR WARS “Beware of Tobacco”, Knox Middle School for two programs, Porter-Starke Services for the Prime for Life Program, and Starke County Probation for the Substance Abuse Evaluation Supplementation program. The Knox City Police Department received a thermal imager and money for drug and evidence lockup.
Four Knox residents were arrested Friday morning after officers from the Knox City Police Department and the Starke County Sheriff’s Department executed a search warrant at 202 W. Locust Drive in Knox.
Officers had received complaints about methamphetamine being used in the residence around small children and after an investigation, a search warrant was issued. Arrested were Ellis Clemons, 44, and Brandie Kotras, 33, who have preliminary charges of Possession of a Legend Drug and Maintaining a Common Nuisance. 25-year-old Tracie Young has preliminary charges of Possession of Marijuana and Maintaining a Common Nuisance. Steve Wilson, 40, was also arrested and he has preliminary charges of Possession of Marijuana, Maintaining a Common Nuisance and Failure to Register as a Sex Offender.
