Police, Fire and Medical Units Respond to a Two-Vehicle Accident on U.S. 35 and 400 N

The Starke County Sheriff’s Department Dispatch Center confirmed that they received a call about a two-vehicle accident on U.S. 35 and 400 N at 6:17 p.m.

Officers from the Hamlet and Knox Police Departments also responded to the accident, along with members of the Knox and Hamlet Fire Departments. Dispatch reported that all medical units and two helicopters were also sent to the scene. Injuries were reported, however, the number of individuals involved and the severity of said injuries are not currently known.  Continue reading

Starke County Law-Enforcement Agencies Join State-Wide Initiative

For the first time in awhile, the law-enforcement agencies of Starke County are joining the state-wide Operation Pull Over campaign. The initiative started on Friday and will run through December 3rd. During this time, there will be increased patrols where officers will be on the look out for motorists violating the seat belt and impaired driving laws.

North Judson Town Marshall Kelly Fisher said her officers will be joining members of the Hamlet and Knox Police Departments as well as the Starke County Sheriff’s Office with the operation. She said it’s important to have this blitz at this time of the year since more people are out on the road visiting friends and family for the holidays.

One bit of advice she had for motorists was to have a designated driver if they plan to be attending a party where they’ll be drinking. She explained the procedure of what happens when an officer has probable cause to pull a vehicle over for driving under the influence. Continue reading

Knox Police Department Taser Fundraiser Less Than $400 Away from Goal

The Knox Police Department has been seeking funds for taser replacement. At the Knox City Council meeting on Tuesday, Mayor Dennis Estok announced that the goal of $6,000 has nearly been reached.

Police Chief Harold Smith has said in the past that the tasers that are currently available to the department are more than 14 years old and in a state beyond repair. Due to budget restrictions, the Knox PD asked for community assistance to replace the tasers. They had a crowd-funding account where people could donate online and they also received check and cash donations. Continue reading

Denney Street Fire Extinguished Within Minutes

A small fire broke out in a home in the 1000 Block of Denney Street, yesterday evening. The Knox Police Department was the first on the scene and reported seeing smoke. The fire department received the call at 5:47 p.m. and rushed to the home in the Binkley subdivision. The fire was contained to the kitchen and was extinguished within 5 minutes. Starke County EMS assisted at the scene and fortunately no injuries were reported.

Knox Couple Arrested Following Drug Investigation

 
 

A Knox man and woman are jailed on drug charges following an investigation by the Starke County Major Crimes Unit. Officers from the Knox Police Department and Starke County Sheriff’s Office executed a search warrant at an Allen Drive residence in Knox on Thursday. They found illegal narcotics and chemicals used to make methamphetamine, according to the incident report. Continue reading
