Continue readingKnox High School’s pit area may be gone, but it continues to be a topic of discussion during school board meetings. Principal Dr. Elizabeth Ratliff told board members last month that the area where the pit used to be has gotten some new furniture. “The nice part is the kids love it,” she said. “So we’re seeing anywhere from 25 to 30 kids sitting in there every day. By being able to spread out the chairs, they’re really enjoying it, taking good care of it. So that’s been a very positive addition, also.”
The Knox School Board has decided to change its meeting schedule starting next month. From February on, regular meetings will be held the third Tuesday of each month at 6:30 p.m. in the corporation’s administrative office. Continue reading
Starke County EMS officials approached the Starke County Council members Monday night to request a transfer of funds to cover ambulance repair costs.
Starke County EMS Director Travis Clary informed the board that an inactive rotation roster for primary and backup ambulances as led to a large amount of breakdowns recently. The costs for repairs have gotten to the point that funds have gone into the red with constant work being done.
There are five ambulances on the fleet: three primary and two backup.
The Starke County EMS Department is reporting record revenue, as EMS Director Paul Mathewson and Mary Lynn Ritchie of the department approached the commissioners for their annual revenue report for 2012 with some very good figures. Ritchie explained that the department received more than their projected revenue, and said the new Advanced Life Support service is definitely a factor.
The members of the Knox Community School Board reorganized at their meeting Monday night. Harold Welter was retained as Board President, Mary Lynn Ritchie was retained as Vice President and Jerry Fletcher was retained as Secretary. William Satterlee III, from Hoeppner, Wagner and Evans in Valparaiso, will continue as the Board’s legal counsel.
During the Spotlight on Success portion of the meeting, the Board viewed a promotional video put together by Middle School students Colin Kulpa and Jason Christopher. Technology Coach, Chris Ross, helped the students with the final touches but Superintendent A.J. Gappa said the students did the majority of the work.
Starke County has been recognized as showing the greatest improvement in the EMA Office in the state. EMA Director, Ted Bombagetti, received the award in Indianapolis recently.
“All of the Directors of the EMAs throughout the state work off the state’s rating system where we do specific projects for our county, classroom participation and a host of other items,” said Bombagetti. “We get a report card on it at the end of the year and fortunately, my department was able to score enough points and we received an award from the state for the most improved county.”
Knox Community School Board members Gary Dulin, Mary Lynn Ritchie and Mike Yankauskas were sworn into office by Knox City Court Judge Charlie Hasnerl on Monday night. The three candidates were reelected into office in the November 2010 General Election.
During the Spotlight on Success portion School Board meeting, the Board commended 5th grade students, Haley Wilkinson and Cheyenne Arrendondo. They submitted Christmas ornaments and a story about their ornaments to Indiana’s First Lady, Cheri Daniels, and their submissions were selected to be hung on the Statehouse Christmas tree. The Knox Community School Board approved two agenda items that involve the Qualified School Construction Bond project at the high school. The project includes rehabilitating the roof, lighting, ceiling and HVAC unit in the pool area and water piping throughout the building.
