Members of the public will have the chance to weigh in on the Oregon-Davis School Corporation’s proposed teacher contract tonight. It calls for most teachers to get a raise of $1,100 to their base salaries. If approved, the new starting pay level would be $32,000, with a maximum salary of almost $54,000. The proposal also includes a retirement incentive for teachers with at least 15 years of service and at least 57 years of age.

Oregon-Davis School Board Accepts Donation for FFA and National Honor Society
A couple student organizations at Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School got a financial boost this week. Superintendent Dr. Don Harman says the school board accepted a donation from the Oregon-Davis Young Farmers organization. “That donation was $700 to the Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School FFA and another $700 to the Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School National Honor Society,” Harman says.
O-D School Board Hires Assistant Principal/Athletic Director for Junior/Senior High School
Oregon-Davis High School has a new administrator. Chris Matthys has officially been hired as the junior/senior high school’s athletic director and assistant principal, according to Superintendent Dr. Don Harman.
Oregon-Davis Students Honor Veterans
Oregon-Davis Junior/Senior High School students hosted 38 local veterans on Tuesday for breakfast a brief program to acknowledge their service to the nation. Principal Tim Pletcher says the 9th grade bio/ag class prepared breakfast, and the 10th grade English U.S. History class researched various wars. Their group projects were compiled to create a single presentation for the veterans.

Starke County Youth Club Prepares for Annual WKVI Radiothon
Starke County Youth Club members and volunteers will take over the WKVI airwaves on Friday to raise money for the nonprofit organization. Executive Director Irene Szakonyi says they provide academic support to 600 youngsters across the county at after-school sites at Knox, North Judson-San Pierre and Oregon-Davis Elementary schools and at O-D Junior/Senior High School. They give students quiet time to do homework, offer one-on-one tutoring in a specific subject and offer a variety of enrichment programs like technology classes, videography and world travel through culture centers. Services are offered each Monday through Friday for three hours after school.
“That is the time when kids are most likely to be the victims of or perpetrators of violent crime. We know that kids who don’t have proper supervision, who don’t have great role models, who aren’t engaged in something productive, make the wrong choices in their lives. So we’re there to provide a safe, engaging and positive environment for kids once the school day ends,” Szakonyi says. Continue reading
